Problem with Paint-on Supports tool and paint-on seams tool.

Hello, I have the following box I'm trying to print. The box has some grooves or 'rails' under it in order for it to grab on to an existing plastic grid. I'm showing the box from above and from it's bottom to make it clearer.

I'm essentially trying to add supports on the grooved rail section below the box model, marked in the picture with a red arrow. I'm trying to use the paint-on support tool, but the minute I move the mouse below the sides of the box, the paint circle cursor disappears completely, so I can't effectively paint anywhere on the underside of the box.

I have the same behaviour with the paint-on seam tool, it won't let me paint anywhere I want, in that case it's even stranger as from certain angles of view point it won't let me paint on a certain area, but if I change the viewpoint angle from which I'm observing the box, It enables the circle in that same area that I couldn't paint before....Has anyone had a similar behaviour? Many thanks!

Pedro

I usually start with the automatic painting tool if there are no other overhangs that I need to be concerned about. You can also try to rotate the model and use the slice angle tool (can't recall what it's called, I'm on the road and can't check) at the bottom of that dialog to "cut away" what's blocking your view.

Formerly known on this forum as @fuchsr -- until all hell broke loose with the forum software...

Its called the clipping view.  However there are models that can have issues, things like intersecting faces etc, they will slice fine but they can stop the pain/selection tools from working properly.  You see it quite a lot on models created by hacking parts from different geometry together.

If you post your saved Prusa Slicer project file (File>Save project As)  then zip up the 3mf created and attach it we can take a look.  Alternately a link to the specific model you are using.

Thanks @fuchsr and @Neophyl for your answers. I've tried using the clipping view and the problem remains, even if I have a clear view of where I want to 'paint' I can't paint on the underside of the box, as the painting cursor is not enabled (disappears) as soon as I move the mouse to that area. I'm uploading the 3MF file in case you can take a look.

Thank you very much 🙂

I was going to take a look but I'm afraid the current forum upgrade issues are resulting in me getting an error when I try and download the file.

RE:

No worries, I've actually just found out what is happening, as I've just seen this problem doesn't manifest in a smaller but very similar box I have. In my 3d Modelling program (Solidworks), I have missed to combine into just one solid the different parts of the model before exporting to STL format. As STL is a triangle tesselation format, I thought there wasn't a concept of 'subparts' or 'subsolids' within a model STL file, but apparently there is...and Prusa Slicer needs the STL file to be only one combined solid for it to work correctly with the paint tool. I've combined all the parts and re-exported to STL the combined solid in Solidworks, and now I can perfectly well paint seams and supports on the underside of the box.

Many thanks to both of you for the help.

RE: Problem with Paint-on Supports tool and paint-on seams tool.

Glad you figured it out for your cad software.  Sounds like the same problem I mentioned when people hack together parts of models.  In Blender when you run the 3d print tool it reports all sorts of errors, most don't stop the slicer actually slicing.  Errors like intersecting faces for example.

But intersecting faces can 'block' access to other faces when it comes to the paint/select brushes.
