Parts not being sliced
Hi,
I made a object using FreeCad. Exported it in STL format. The object is made of multiple parts. Some 10mm x 10mm x 200mm cube get sliced and some not. The parts are place in a symetric matter and there is no explanation why it is not being Sliced.
Any help is much welcomed.
JR

Here is an example of STL file that does not get sliced properly;

How about this?
I used Netfabb to fix this, via Prusa Slicer, see below

Hi joantabb,
Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I do not have Netfabb in my Sliced view!??!
Is this an addon? Where can I get it?
Thanks,
JR
RE: Parts not being sliced
Hi joantabb,
I saw that Netfabb is a paying software. Do you think that Prusa will fix this bug? Do you think the problem is because of the file format and that I should try another file format?
My regards,
JR
RE: Parts not being sliced
Hi JR,
It's included as part of Prusa Slicer.
it's on the plater page, not the sliced image page, and you have to select the part first, so that it is highlighted in Green

RE: Parts not being sliced
Note: AFAIK the free NetFabb stl repair service is only on Win10 installations of PrusaSlicer. (It works on my Win10 computers, but doesn't work on my library's Win7/8 computers.) I don't think it works on Linux or Mac as Prusa states that it is for Windows computers (due to unexplained licensing reasons).

sorry!

Hello Joan,
Working on W10 64 also on my laptop I also can't see NetFabb, I remember it was there in Slic3r PE.
Any idea now how come?

@kees-zweedijk
To be honest Kees, I don't know. do you have this option under the Prusa menu in the windows program selection box? you might need to install Netfabb before it becomes available.
I have just downloaded the latest drivers set, off the Prusa Drivers page and Netfabb was in Slicer when I ran the file!

@sembazuru
OK thanks... I am on Windows 8. This is why it is not there.

@joantabb
OK I was able to install Netfabb in my Prusa Slicer on my Windows 8, but after repairing the STL file... is it still not able to slice it properly!!!! In the File menu, I used the repair STL file... it was saved in obj format... I created a new projet and importated the new obj file... when sliced, it is still missing 50% of the parts.
I am a little bit discouraged... it is really not such a complexe part to Slice!!!

You may want to try out MeshMixer. It can also repair STLs, and you can choose one of several repair techniques to see which one works best before saving out the repaired stl. YMMV depending on what MeshMixer finds wrong.

@jr_guilbault
There are 344 reversed facets in that file. The repair option you get where it saves out the 'repaired' file as on obj doesnt handle fixing it as its really badly broken. If you look at the file on the plater you can see some of the sides are a darker green, they are the problem ones as the geometry on them is reversed so the outside are actually facing inwards. Perfectly valid for a model mathematically but it cant exist correctly in the real world. So it 'looks' correct but it isnt.
The full netfabb repair available through the windows 10 only installation of Prusa Slicer can fix it. If you are not using Win10 you can use the online netfabb service at https://service.netfabb.com/login.php . Its free but does require you to register for an autodesk account. This is basically the same service that the Win10 version of Prusa Slicer uses. Not sure why it isnt available on the other platforms but its probably some murky license type restriction issue.
The full netfabb fix is actually very very good at fixing dodgy models. Or you could use Meshmixer as Sembazuru suggested but that has a bit more of a learning curve. It does have the advantage of not being cloud based though and can be useful for other things besides repairing files.

@sembazuru
Hi,
I tried MeshMixer too... nothing seems to be able to read the STL file correctly or repair it. I redesigned my project and regrouped the parts differently. Now the problem is fixed.
Thanks to everyone for your time,
JR
RE: Parts not being sliced
@neophyl
Hi,
Thank you a lot for the information. My project is generated by Python code I made. My project is more complex than what I shared. Using a coding, I can regroup parts logically in an orderly matter. With this issue, I found out that this is not necessarily a good practice as the conversion algorithm into G-Code will not necessarily be helped by well ordered parts. Theoretically a good design does not insure easier translation into G-Code. I am not sure if there is best practice in designing objects so that it is easy to Slice. I will check.
My regards,
JR

@jr_guilbault
Just a thought, now you are using FreeCAD - If you exported the complex model in STEP format, this should enforce a solid part. Then re-imported the STEP file into FreeCAD again and converted it to STL.
I know this is an extra step, but it could be that the STEP to STL conversion generated a better model for the slicer.
Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

Hi,
Yes doing this corrected the problem with FreeCad.
Thanks,

@joantabb
Hello Joan,
Found Netfabb! Had to rightclick on the selected model and there it is: Fix through the NetFabb. I thought it was within the filemenu just like the former Slic3R PE.
But what I don't know: was it there already directly after installing PrusaSlicer or was it there after I installed Netfabb last week?
Bye, Kees
