Making hole into object with zero infill in Prusa Slicer

Hi,

I wonder whether it is possible to make a hole into a model with zero infill. Use case may be for example piggy bank - I have a model of a pig, I set 2 perimeters + 0% infill and need to cut hole/slot for inserting coins. I have tried to use both negative volume and modifier with perimeters set to 0 to make the hole, however both methods add extra perimeters inside the object (see picture) at the borders between modifier and 'hollow' inside of the object. Is it possible to make clean  hole somehow?

Thanks a lot for any ideas, Daren.

Not really no.  As you have discovered the modifiers don't work like that.  They are handy for some things but aren't a replacement for actual CAD.  You can do the hole if its through the bottom or top easy enough.

If you want a hollow 'piggy bank' then model it up that way with a slot exactly where and how you want it.  That way the slicer can do its real job of slicing the model.

It is theoretically possible to do this with modifiers but with reasonable effort only with the simplest of shapes (see attached 3mf). I basically used a negative volume inside the sphere to trim the negative volume that creates the slot.

But I'm with Neophyl—you'll have a lot more joy if you design this properly into the model and not try to make it happen after the fact.

Thanks you guys for reply and ideas how to get to results in slicer.

Dealing with 'do it in CAD argument' - the point is that I believe that this is trivial operation (definitely easier than for example adding embossed text 🙂 and it would be nice to be doable in slicer, simple because it would be easier then some reverse engineering in CAD (hollowing complex mesh object).

I thong that I understand negative volume behavior better now, however, it looks to me that 0 perimeter modifier that adds some extras into model is a bug not a feature... 🙂

Except its not a bug.  Its how the modifiers have always worked and how they are designed to work.  However there are lots of people that agree with you which is why there have been MANY issues raised on github regarding modifiers.  Also why most of them get closed by the devs too as they disagree.

The thing about a modifier for many/most of the settings is that to do the processing, PS splits the object into separate logical entities.  So the modified area is treated like a different object.  So you get perimeters around them for example as at that point they are their own 'object'.  Even just changing perimeter speed through a modifier will make it a different object.
