Import Model With Color

Hi - I have a file that I'd like to print in multiple colors. I know how to color it and print it, but if I then need to make any tweaks to the model, I have to reexport it to Prusa Slicer and recolor the entire thing.

Ideally, I could color it in the program I'm using to design it (SketchUp) and then export it with colors to Prusa Slicer. Is there any way to do that? Or is there another program I can use, besides SketchUp?

Thanks!

Chris

You can try exporting the model from SketchUp as an STL with color information, but Prusa Slicer doesn't always support this well. Another option is to use Blender.

I don't know Sketchup but the principle applies to all CAD.  Make each colour a seperate part, export each colour as a different but related file then import them all as parts - NOT objects, assign a different extruder to each part, and print.

Attached is a zip file containing two parts, import them together and proceed as above.

Diems method is the only practical one.  Prusa Slicer or others currently don't import any information like colour or textures etc.  Doesnt matter if you use Sketchup, Blender, Fusion etc.  None of that info is suppoorted.  Especially from formats like STL.  They don't even really work amongst themselves with 3mf format as the people forking from PS changed things too much.

I think you should think about the direction If your SketchUp supports 3MF export format, you can export the model in this format because 3MF supports color.

Yes 3mf supports colour and many other things as it’s a container format. That doesn’t mean software you are loading into will actually accept that or know how to handle it. At the moment the slicer does not. Implementers are free to use the data stored in many ways or not, if they just want to ignore it.

The advantage of having separate parts in something like a 3mf is it is then easier using Prusa slicers tools to define the parts colour or other data.
