how can I generate support material using object manipulation settings

I have a small part that uses object manipulation to get a good result. Full disclosure, the settings were done by another forum user in response to a question I had on why my part wasn't printing without slumping. I'm trying to fix a problem on the bottom. There should be a 1.48 in x 0,125 in recess.  The first picture at 3.15 mm shows the recess. It goes up almost to 3,3mm. The 2nd shows the solid fill at 3.3 mm which is the top of the recess. Since there was no support material in the void I got the mess shown in the third picture.

How can I use object manipulation to add support material to just the recess? The rest of the print works (or use to until I added the recess).

Best Answer by Eef:

In prusaslicer:
- select the object
- rightclick, scrolldown
- add support enforcer - cylinder
- adjust size and placement of cylinder
- when slicing select supports for support enforcers only.
- slice and check if OK.

We will do what we have always done. We will find hope in the impossible.

Or use paint-on support. Look at the model from below and paint the supports onto the overhang.

If the OP has used a modifier to create the recess they will not be able to paint that area.  There are no faces to paint as they don't exist.  It is one of the fundamental limits of using modifiers and painting together.

As such they are left with using ANOTHER modifier as described (although do make sure that the support enforcer goes further up that your recess modifier).  Or using global support defined using the angle setting.  But we know how auto supports suck in general 🙂

Of course the 'best' way is to add the recess in CAD in the first place.  And THEN use the paint tool to define the real faces where you want support 😉

Very true.  Truth is I had no idea what OP meant by "object manipulation"  If it means creating holes with modifiers, then yes painting on won't work.

RE: Closer but still no support material generated

I'm closer but I still don't see support material generated in the recess which is 1.5in dia x .125 in high. I have supports for support enforcers only. Under the print settings I clicked generate support material and auto supports off. I added a generic cylinder 1.52 in dia x 0.128 in high at 0, 0, 0 in the object coordinate system which should place it in the recess area. After I slice it I still don't see any support material. Evidently I'm missing something. I attached the updated project. Ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Can't see a project attached. Needs to be zip compressed or the server software will silently reject it.

Just to clarify: When I load the 3mf I see supports being generated:

So I assume you're concerned they don't extend all the way up to the "roof" of that opening. Try turning "Thick Bridges" off, this gives me reasonable supports. I would probably also switch to snug instead of grid support, which usually gives you much better results, plus increase the top z distance to 0.2, for easier removal.

There are also plenty of other changes from the default profile, I didn't check which make sense and which don't.

please post your version of the  project. I have something different that doesn't show the support material. Mine shows the top of the recess. It is probably something in the  print tab. I should be able to compare your version with mine and spot the difference.

I don't have a version. I just opened the 3mf you posted.

Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing?

@jimd

While I'm sure @fuchsr has this covered as I recognize him as a very capable individual, I took the time to adjust the supports, and want to know, as fuchsr what you might be seeing on your end. If I remember correctly this was for a musical instrument?

This might help, I do know that 2.7.4 has some issues that could cause this, this file was made in 2.7.1.

Good memory it is the bottom (sole) and negative battery contact for an electronic bagpipe I designed and built to see if I could do it,  There are only three I've built or intend to build. For me the challenge is what drives me.

The changes I made to the design were to correct some weak points in the print. Thanks for helping me get this sorted out.

I see a difference but still not a solid support.

RE:

@jimd

I purposefully did not do solid support and used a ring, as the solid support might have been difficult to remove, I guessed as to the length the bridging would need to be to produce a reasonably clean result and still be relatively easy to remove. If this is not the case please send me a private message and I can help further.

It also occurred to me that you might be printing this from ABS, as this seems to be the best material for this part, based on what I know of it.

perhaps I'm wrong.

I hope this helps you Jim.

Thanks for the help. Yes I'm using abs. Pla was too brittle. I'll run your project in the morning.

RE: how can I generate support material using object manipulation settings

I had to test my printer, so was about printing a benchy. But, hey, lets test this printfile.
- Opened the file you have sent.
- Removed layers; added a support enforcer (flat cylinder);
- sliced it for PLA (what is now on the printer); layerheight 0,2 mm
- no errors, just fine, uploaded and printed.

Some pictures to show result. (with conclusion: the file you made is very perfect! Printed in PLA on old MK2.5 already looks very fine.

We will do what we have always done. We will find hope in the impossible.
