"Empty layers detected, the output would not be printable." but on purpose.

Hello everyone,

today i tried to print a multiple occurences of the same piece in stack (on Z axis). as i'm more familiar with my former Slicer, i prepared my model stack on this one, exported it in STL to import it on PrusaSlicer. On purpose, i made exactly 1 empty layer beetwen every occurence of the piece to behave like a support. It work on all my slicers but the PrusaSlicer. So i'm here, does anyone know if  i can bypass this security, or if i'll have to slice this one with another slicer !
Thanks by advance.

Yannis

Setup :
Prusa I3MK3s+MMU2S

PrusaSlicer2.1.1

Windows 10.

If there are empty layers, either the object is broken or you need to enable supports. Without seeing your model we will never know.

It sounds like you are doing something similar to the stacked head bands. They have a small gap between each layer of head band, but bridge the gap with strategically placed small posts. Check out the model to see what they've done here: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/27267

@bubnikv

Hello, the object isn't broken, as i said in the post a stacked the multiple occurences of the object with exactly 1 empty layer between them on purpose, just so the beginning of the next will no completely stick to the previous one ! Sorry not adding the STL, i was in a hurry ! The problem was solved by modifying the stl so i can print without having to separate the occurences !

@sembazuru

Exactly,

thanks for the link, but we have made ours due to local constraints and needs of the users ! I fixed the problem by making in the top of the object an outer perimeter the diameter of the nozzle, so i can stack them sticked, but i have one layer with only on perimeter beetwen every occurence so it break apart quite easily ! Thanks for your answers !

I was trying this as well using the "Add Part" function and ran into the same problem, as soon as there is an empty layer, it won't slice. I THINK this could be solved by the addition of a setting that essentially says, "Ignore empty layers thinner than [specify a number]". Logical guess would be 0.2mm, the same as the "detachable" support setting. But each layer has to be it's own complete object because (I think) if there are only small posts separating each layer, the object's top layer(s) will only print on the instance at the top of the stack, not on each intermediate item in the middle. In a live chat earlier today (on a different matter, and before I downloaded 2.2.0), I asked Robby if the ability to stack parts is in the new version, or being thought about. He replied "That might come with the next version." i.e., next after 2.2.0.  So there's that,

It seems I have to talk to Robby as well. There is a Czech saying: A promise never disappoints.

You can do that already by loading the other objects as volumes of the 1st object (only available in advanced and expert mode).

I have a difficulty following this discussion. You guys may have different goals, that may be possibly achieved with similar means. A picture is worth thousand words, sharing a 3MF helps as well.

I suppose you want to stack objects to use one object's top surface as a support for the object above? You can currently only do that if you have at least a tiny extrusion between the stacked objects, see the attached 3mf.

@bubnikv

Well, he DID say "might". In any case, I wasn't taking that as a promise!

I found a way to print stackable objects by enabling support to "everywhere" and then blocking out everything but a small part of the print. It still prints a small amount of support but it tricks Prusa Slicer in to letting it slice the model anyway!

@manuelmendoza766

Frustrating.  My old old Zortrax 200 doesnt' dis allow this.  I'll try doing a semi support in a small area and killing the support generate elsewhere.  Making PPE face shields in Colorado, USA.

Well, here's an interesting twist.... I found this thread because I too encountered the same error for the first time.  I have a model that I downloaded from thingiverse.  I imported the stl into PS and then selected the side I thought best for the base.  I knew the part was going to require supports so I turned them on "Everywhere" then sliced.   I got the error.  I turned off the supports and just like that, NO error!  The model is fine.  In my particular situation, it's PS's supports that are causing this error.

My solution

Hi there,

I also encountered the same problem while printing a battery organiser.

The solution was found on https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/5976

In other words: Turn on "detect thin walls" in PS.
