Downgrading from 2.8.0 to 2.7.4 on Windows?

I want to install 2.7.4 again, and downloaded the zip file.  Any things I need to know?   I'm fighting what I believe is a bug, and it would be nice to be able to run either one to verify that quickly, but if I have to uninstall 2.8.0, so be it.

Thanks!

I unzipped the 2.7.4 files, and went ahead and ran the "prusa-slicer.exe" from the unzip folder in my Download directory.  That opened just fine, and I could load and run the project I've been fighting with.  I still have 2.8.0 working, which still resides in the C:\Programs directory structure.

I have verified that there is a nasty bug in 2.8.0, which I will report on separately.  I may uninstall that, and park the 2.7.4 files where hey normally live.

You can run as many versions as you like separately.  The only issue you have to watch out for is that all the official release versions all use the same config folder by default.  Same with all betas use the default beta structure and alphas use the default alpha structure.

Different versions might not like some of the config though.  But you can force PS to install and run the config folder in whatever directory you like by using different command line switches.

If you create a new batch file in your extracted folder , call it whatever you want, but for example PS_local_settings.bat and then add the following line into the batch file

prusa-slicer-console.exe --datadir settings

Then when you run that batch file it will start the PS version in that folder and tell it to use create and use a local sub folder called settings when it is run.

In this way you can in effect force a clean install each time by changing the folder name or create a series of localised versions each with their own settings directory.  Its a great way to run things if you want to compare versions as you are not getting config structures also bleeding over.

You can use the export config bundle>Import config bundle to copy custom profiles from one version to another.

Just remember to always start with the local batch file, otherwise it will try and use the system default config folder.

Thanks for the detailed response.  I was wondering if any configurations I had saved in 2.8.0 would be backward compatible with 2.7.4, but so, far, that seems to be OK.

For now, I've verified that 2.8.0 is broken.  I'll just remove it and do a regular install of 2.7.4, but I'll keep this in mind for the future.  When they fix 2.8.0, I will install it separately using your procedure.  I'm not going to blindly trust PrusaSlicer updates anymore...

I've downgraded, 2.8.0 doesn't seem to be working for me for certain types of models depending on complexity. I think it might be because of this?

"The integrated G-code Viewer has been significantly reworked to improve its performance. Less data are now transmitted between the CPU and GPU and more of the work is now performed on the GPU side." (Changelog 2.8.0, Improved G-Code Viewer, accessed 13 Sep 2024)
