color change without filament settings?

I've searched the forum but can't find an answer to my question. I'm new to Prusa slicer so I may just be missing the obvious and apologize if so.

When I click on the plus sign next to the layer slider (in version 2.2) I am able to see the M600 in the resulting gcode. What I also expected to see but don't is the selected filament changing when I slide to either side of that layer.

Since the filament can be very different e.g. I've seen someone make a mask from PETG and TPU, I expected this to be obvious.

Am I just not correctly assigning each filament on either side of the layer change?

Thank you!

Hmm, it's curious that nobody has responded. I guess this is handled in the MMU so that's what people use for more than one material? Maybe color change is just a novelty.

One solution is to slice the model twice (for a two color print) and manually put the layer sections together in a hybrid gcode file. That seems clunky an error prone though.

Hi William,

the M600 colour change is for manual operation not mmu.

the sliced view should show the colour change for you
the first colour shows  Orange, Red, then Orange, then Yellow, then green etc. to purple  and then if you have more changes they cycle again...

Joan, thank you for your reply. The GUI does display the changes as you've shown, however, it appears to be only visual. The actual filament used shows as the last one selected and doesn't change as one crosses the boundary with the slider. If I had two spools of PETG (black and white for example), they could have different diameters and Extrusion Multipliers so I'd expect the color change to track which filament profile was to be used for each section in the resulting gcode.

RE: color change without filament settings?

Hi William,
I have used Colour change many times,

here for instance I used Bronze Silk for the bottom and Gold silk for the surround and letters.

With M600 there is no automatic filament change,
I almost always use  the same type of filament, and don't worry about temperature differences...

I have used PLA and TPU together and I manually changed the temperatures...
Below is a zip file containing one way to do a multicolour print from a single STL with raised letters, using MMU2

In this option, you could specify different extruders/filaments automatically.

Thank you so much Joan. I understand your recommendations and very much appreciate them.

My original question was about the software automatically tracking filament settings per layer / zone which it apparently does not. I was concerned I was missing something about how to use it and it again appears as though I am not. All is well.
