Can I make some parts in my model have extra walls, and not others?

I'm about to start experimenting with heat set inserts and I suspect I'd want extra walls around the holes for the inserts. I could always print everything with extra walls, but that would take longer. Something like split the STL files into different parts then combine them with different slicer settings?

Best Answer by FoxRun3D:

Right click on the part, Add modifier. Position modifier, then set perimeters for the modifier to whatever value you want.

Yes, learn how to us modifiers first, prusaslicer can do this easily.

Thanks. Time to read up on modifiers in the manual!

Thanks for the tip. I did this but the modifier did more than I wanted it to. My model has a perimeter count of 1. I wanted to make that 2 for the inner wall of a tube. I added a cylinder modifier and set perimeter count to 2. It did increase the perimeter count of the inner wall of the tube but it also then added 3 perimeters at the outer boundary of the modifier cylinder. When I set the modifier cylinder perimeter count to 1, it behaved as I would have expected and didn't add any perimeters at it's outer boundary. Not sure if this is a bug?

Couldn't get the images to appear and then found out that you have a time limit to edit posts!

Position of modifier cylinderPerimeter count = 2. Notice 3 extra perimeters in addition to inner 2 perimetersPerimeter count = 1 on modifier. No extra sets of perimeters created.

Its the way it works.  What you are doing by using the modifier like that is splitting it into 2 distinct parts for slicing purposes.  So the perimeter gets applied to both sides of the boundary.  So 2 for your new volume and the single one for the other volume. Not  expected by most people when they use it but its been done way forever.  Its one of the limitations of the current modifiers.
