Avoid travel moves over printed object
Hey Community,
is it somehow possible to slice a print so that the extruder never moves over the previously printed layer during travel moves? I print transparent objects with PETG and the travel moves always smear the surface, which leads to a worse transparency. I played around with "avoid crossing perimeters" and "seam position", but that was not satisfactory.
In the picture below: I don't want this blue line (travel move) to be over the previously printed surface.
Is there any way to set the extruder to move directly out of the object after infill, and only move back onto the object when the next infill or perimeter begins?
Thanks for your input 🙂

Yes it is. First you must be in expert mode of Prusa Slicer settings (top right of the screen). Then open the 'printing configuration' menu, go to 'layers and perimeters' and scroll down to 'quality' settings.
You'll see an option called 'avoid crossing perimeters'. Just enable it and you're done.

Unfortunately, this does not lead to success. In the image above, "avoid crossing perimeters" is even activated
RE: Avoid travel moves over printed object
Avoid crossing perimeter strikes to keep the nozzle inside the model, not outside. Have you tried enabling z hop... (z lift)

RE: Avoid travel moves over printed object
There is no setting to avoid already printed models during travels moves. Z hop lifts above but will still travel 'over' the area.
RE: Avoid travel moves over printed object
Z lift is unfortunately not enough for my purpose.
I already thought there was no option for that. It's a shame that you can't modify the slicer individually. There are often things that you can't adjust.
Anyway, thank you very much for your ideas 🙂

hello everyone
RE: Avoid travel moves over printed object
I know this is an older thread, but wanted to reiterate that this is important to me also. For multi-material printers like the XL, where you may choose to use a wipe tower, the print head is often moving from the wipe tower over the print to wherever it chooses to start again. Sometimes, and quite often in longer prints, this leads to to carrying a big old blob of gunk from the wipe tower right into the middle of the print somewhere, making a mess. This is especially true with sticky filaments like PTEG.
I do use Z-lift, but it doesn't eliminate the problem. "Avoid crossing perimeters" doesn't help with this. Changing seams to "nearest" does reduce it some, but still having problems.
Overall I find the wipe tower logic to be lacking. Where it starts and stops the wipe can end up causing the buildup of gunk to begin with. And then the routing between the tower and the objects is lacking. Plus, you can't use variable layer height that's different on multiple objects with a wipe tower. This whole area needs some rework.
