3mf is there any way ...

Is there any way you can easily either just load the model from a 3mf file without it clobbering all your settings or else extract the stl or obj or whatever and just load that? Very frustrating!

Looking for something simple here if at all possible.

Thx.

Yes.

There is a difference between Import and Open.  Opening (cntrl+O)  a project loads in ALL relevant data from the Project.  So profiles, geometry, modifiers etc.
Importing (cntrl+I) does not.  Your current profiles stay the same.

Many people just don't get that fundamental difference.  Usually those who use a double click on a 3mf file to open prusa slicer.

They also dont take advantage of the way the software works.  You can save 3mf project files with specific combinations of profiles, including filament selections for things like the MMU and then use those saved project as workspace templates that you can load in later.
So you can either open PS and load a workspace 3mf and them use import to load in new objects, or you can double click a 3mf and 'nerf' your settings but then just use the import config from project option (cntrl+alt+L) to replace the profiles with ones saved to your workspace projects.

Once you understand how it works it becomes very very easy to work with.

RE: 3mf is there any way ...

This is the reason that I have dis-associated the .3mf file type with any application.

I've previously had cases where I would try to be a Good Guy (tm) and look at someone's difficult print, only to have it 'step on' the settings I was using for a current project.

I also found out that the back (undo) arrow in PS will not restore the settings.

I think I responded in a thread about PS that I think it would be a Good Thing (tm) if PS included a prompt, when opening a .3mf, to either load the project or import the objects only, as does Cura.

Using "import" instead of "open" works for me.

But why can't you just select your profiles after you opened a project?

RE: 3mf is there any way ...

Lichtjeager from the thread on github where people want how the software works to be changed it seems that not many users actually make use of the ability to save their own profiles.
A lot of users also don't seem to know about all the various import and export options available either.  They are used to the way other software works and don't want to take the trouble to modify their workflows to accommodate how it works now.

I don't have objections to the functionality changing, as long as its configurable so that those of us who are used to how it works now don't have to relearn it just so others don't have to.  I do think its a shame though that people are reporting 'bugs' when its largely a matter of education on the way it works now.

The github thread in question if you aren't already familiar with it https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/6377

On a related note, I really wish that the developers would be more active here, actively listening to issues (Are they?) instead of apparently keeping to themselves over on GitHub.

I would think that the best design would be at least a warning that settings are to be overwritten.  (And I've seen some .3mf files which appear to have no settings.)

RE: 3mf is there any way ...

JSW, if a 3mf file doesn't contain any settings then PS wont load them.  It will just leave the profiles you already had there.  It only loads settings that it understands on an Open.  So if some other software (such as F360 for example) was to include some materials data for an object then PS would just ignore it as it doesn't know what its for.

As for developers spending time here, id prefer not.  They should be coding 🙂  Now if PS wanted some of their official support staff to be more active here (like they are starting to be on some of the github posts) then that wouldn't be a bad thing.

The point I was trying to make is that there should be a better connection between PS (and firmware) developers and the user base.

RE: 3mf is there any way ...

Maybe I didn't explain it well, over on github, in the firmware repositories especially Prusa seem to be having some dedicated support staff replying to the issues there and acting as an interface between the people posting issues and the developers.  I think this is all to the good as it means they can handle the requests for extra info etc and leave more time for the devs to, well develop.

I think extending those support staff to the forum here too would be a good idea, so I was actually agreeing with you.  Just not the devs themselves.

Save a .3mf of (each of) your standard settings then after each white knight operation open whichever you wish to return to.

Cheerio,

Actually, removing the 'open with' association cured it nicely.

RE: 3mf is there any way ...

I don't like it when people from prusa (e.g. Developers, Documentation writers, etc), come here, it just causes problems, everyone that ever wanted to say anything to them pops in and suddenly the thread, whatever thread it might be, is hijacked, by these folks and people can't control themselves. I much prefer they not show up here anymore then they do currently.

Oh wow! Holy whatever! Didn't expect anything like this!

I guess I was blind to the fact that import works with 3mf as well as stl.

Thx for the clueing-in, learned something today!
