Migration from other sites

It would be useful to have a way for users to quickly migrate their content from thingiverse or other sites. The current method of uploading a zip file containing models and images works okay, but when I upload a zip file downloaded directly from thingiverse it imports the model thumbnails that thingiverse generated, which could lead to claims of infringement.

I think the zip file method has the potential of working well, but it should be modified to recognize zips from thingiverse and strip out any non-user-generated content. Error messages from extraneous files from thingiverse should be suppressed.

I think that a metafile format should be defined that could be packaged within the ZIP which would allow the item name, description, print directions, and any other fields, to be bulk imported, either via a menu option on the site or an API call. If Prusaprint has a clearly specified protocol for ingesting designs from users, the community could produce and maintain any packaging tools and/or scrapers needed to migrate their content. I would imagine there would be fewer legal and logistical issues for Prusa if it did not directly provide the migration tools that interact with other design sharing sites.

Re: Migration from other sites

Hi Eric,
Sorry for a late reply.

Our IT is now preparing some kind of migrating tool:) We want to make the migration as easy as possible, however as you are saying we want to avoid any lawsuit. Our dev are now examining TG's API.

Once we will have some statement, I will let you know. Thank you for offering a community migrating help! We have to fill the site with lot of models before the release, definitely.

Thank you for your contribution.

We are also examining with lawyers the gcode nature in terms of copyright protection. P.e. if you have a 3D model, which is an author's work - protected under mental property ... a generated gcode is not a author's work - in terms it is not a creative process. However you still use original data from someone else...and expecially when you provide gcode for a payed model and thus limit his potential business, that would be a problem.

It is not just about the migrating. It is about the mind procession in back as well.
