Filament not extruding and clicking

https://storage.googleapis.com/prusa3d-content-prod-14e8-wordpress-forum-prod/2026/06/4710a3ba-vid_20260602_124721.mp4

After printing with Prusament PLA for a while, the filament stops extruding. Only a few layers are printed. Then the gearbox starts making a clicking noise.
I’ve had to clean the idler and nozzle before (the filament hardened and broke). The filament feeding issue keeps recurring.
When assembling the hotend with the nozzle, the hotend moves around the axis (not just down); could that also be the cause of the problem? Thanks

The Prusa Galaxy PLA they sent out has issues jamming the hotend, assuming this was the pla used.

I think I might have the exact same issue.

In my case, it only happens when i try to print PLA. When i print PETG or TPU it works fine. i have no idea why...

It seems like the planetary gears are the ones doing the skipping and actually making the clicking sound. But i dont know why they just seemingly randomly start to skip. Most prints fail, but not all. Some prints are just fine. On the prints that fail, it often fails at around the same place in the print, so it is repeatalbe.

@mh Where you able to find out more information or even a fix? And does your situation match mine with my observations?

I hope to be able to fix it soon, as this is very frustrating!

I'm having the same issue with my Core One L. I would hope that Prusa would put together a troubleshooting document/video as this appears to be a relatively common problem.

I may have the same issue as well. However, the print (TPU 85) turned out good, but I was unable to unload the filament - clicking sound, but no filament transport, neither backward (unload) nor forward (load).

So far I was unable to find a manual on how to open the filament tract or the nextruder, but I‘ll keep trying …

Some guidance may be in here https://help.prusa3d.com/article/nextruder-filament-sensor-core-one-core-one-l-mk4-s-mk3-9-s-xl_465702

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

RE: Filament not extruding and clicking

Hi _KaszpiR_,

yes, that was indeed helpful. Obviously the retraction of the Filament was not successful, so it tangled up inside the nextruder instead of being pushed backwards. I was able to remove it from the nextruder as well as the guiding tube using the pliers.

However, I‘d like to know what went wrong. Heat creep? TPU 85 will surely be susceptible to this. But after pulling the remaining filament from the guiding tube I realized that the physical resistance was quite significant - I was unable to push it backwards, I had to pull it out. Maybe there is a problem in the materials used to build the filament guidance tract? Could it be avoided by using material with less friction?

Plus, there may even be some obstructions within the duct at the start and the end of the tube, because I had significant problems inserting the soft filament beyond these points and only succeeded by bypassing the filament sensors …
