RE: Why did the shift occur?
I have no experience with 3-D programs.
TinkerCAD, an Autodesk site, has an entry level, free, very usable, online 3D cad program. Create an account and start designing. They have the basics, it is part based not formula based, but it is good enough to make some useful things to print, but isn't something you'd build a clockworks with.

RE: Why did the shift occur?
I had a scattering of this problem around a month after I started using my printer. After I lubricated the Z-Lead screws, the problem became very rare.
