What can cause heater calibration to fail?

6.3.5 firmware standard aluminum heat block, no issues reaching any temperature, thermistor readings correct and verified with and external probe. How ever the heat calibration fails on the nozzle.  Not a big deal really since I don’t have issues with printing. Just curious about what could cause this.

Aha... It was the silicon sock. I always use a sock so I had turned the setting to true in the printhead setup when I started my first print after assembling the kit. I know this because I took a photo of my settings on that day. Sometime between then and now it switched to false. I don't recall doing this. Anyway, this is why the heater test failed.

OK, above I meant to say 6.3.4 firmware. Anyway, for the test it sets the nozzle temperature to 290 and then presumably times out and fails the test because it doesn't reach the target temperature in time. In my case it gets to about 200 before it fails. Of course there is zero feedback on what exactly went wrong. So I manually set the nozzle to 290 and left it there for 30 minutes. It held steady. Maybe the generic 24V heat block heating element is not as efficient as the ones Prusa provides? I should compare the wattage I guess.

It's a 24V 40W heater which matches the spec. So not sure. I swapped out the hot end with a different one and get the same.
