No USB

So I just got my new printer in yesterday (Assembled version) and set it up. It runs through all its initialization stuff and should be ready to print. Unfortunately, when I stick the USB that came with it in, nothing happens. It doesn't recognise that anything has been put into it. I tried a second brand-new flash drive and nothing happened with it either. I've no idea what I can do to fix this issue.

Contact Prusa support via chat (you may need your serial number) and they will talk you through some basic tests.

My Prusa provided USB drive worked at first but no longer does so. It was really frustrating to find a working replacement. When using a different flash drive, not every brand works. For one it has to be (in my experience at least) USB-2 and not USB-3 and low capacity (like 8GB for example). It also has be FAT formatted and not exFAT which won’t work. I also found that if I format on MacOS there are problems with hidden files it adds for indexing. I’ve only gotten it to reliably work when formatting using Windows. In my case I had a micro-SD USB-2 adapter. I then took a 64GB micro-SD card, partitioned it with an 8GB partition then formatted it as FAT32 in Windows. Only then could I get it to work.

I hope Prusa comes out with a version of the Buddy board that has eMMC built in so an external USB drive is not required but optional. Or better yet, just add an SD interface instead. After all, last time I checked it was 2025 and not 2005…

This is another oddity: I realised reading this that I am still using the original Prusa supplied drives on my XL and Mk3 which makes the SD card over 8 years old ... OK, I have other drives, not least because I can slice and save on one whilst the other is printing.  The other drives are just cheap generics and apart from one that I stood on and another that fell into hot soup (don't ask) they have been trouble free.

I tend to keep the drives mostly empty, they may accumulate a dozen or so files for one project but as soon as that is done I clear them and start over; all my archives are tucked away on the NAS.  I have probably reformatted them, I do so with drives from time-to-time but I don't keep track of which ones.  I am a Linux user so I have never connected to them with Mac or Windows.

And although I ran network cables I have never bothered to connect them as I have to attend the machines to start and clear prints (always start with freshly dried filament), so it's easier to carry a drive than to mess around with remote control and I would never consider using WIFI around moving machinery.

Cheerio,
