Is there an idiots guide to belt tuning

Because I'm said idiot.

My printer was running fine, but I noticed some small artifacts, so I figured I'd make sure the belts were tuned up. I opened the app, and it will not listen to the belts at all no matter what I do.

So I figured I'd use the website and my phone, but here is where I'm a complete idiot and have run into troubles.

I read on the instructions to push the print head to the back middle. It then says to strum the belt with the phone close. I do that and I get wildly different results each time. I then realized (after adjusting)) that I'm not sure quite which belts I'm meant to be strumming since it doesn't specify and there are no photos.

Am I meant to do it left and right of the print head? Am I mean to do it left and right sides? How hard do I strum? How close should the phone be?

I looked for a video and it doesn't exist. I tried the left and right side, getting both to ~85 (it varies on phone position, how hard or not hard I strum etc...) and ran a benchie, which shifted entirely mid print. So now I have a printer that's not functioning properly and I'm not quite sure the correct way to tension these belts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if photos are included. Thank you!

I  just wanted to update this so hopefully others can laearn from my stupidity.

I took the top off of the printer today, and eyeballed the tension rollers. After doing that, I found I was a lot closer and was able to use the app. Apparently with the app, if you aren't close enough it just won't show anything. It took quite a few tries but I got it all to 85/85. It's currently printing a benchy from the SD card and looks good.

I was apparently quite far out (the left was nearly all the way out and right nearly all the way in). After eyeballing it and using the app, everything passed the x and y tests.

So if anyone else ever runs into this try eyeballing it first, and take your time. Test test and retest.

RE:
1. Move Nextruder to the rear center position

2. Pull out the left and right belts (in the middle of the left and right)

3. A frequency range of 80-90 Hz is acceptable, 85 Hz is ideal

4. It is important that both belts are tuned the same (acceptable difference of up to 3 Hz)

In the middle of the strip, I grab the strip with the thumb and index finger of either hand, lift the strip about 1 cm and release. The same on the other side from the print head

Please excuse my writing style.

Thank you that's what I was doing but it's failing x and y axis tests now. Both are at 85 using the tuning website (the app won't work for me at all). I'll try it again on sometime over the weekend.

Not sure what phone you are on, but you have to approve the browser to access your microphone.   On the iPhone it pops up and asks...

It's a galaxy s10. I approved the use of a the mic and the mic icon shows in the taskbar showing it's in use but it never shows any sound in the app. It works fine with the website using both firefox and chrome on the phone so I've been using that. I've force stopped, cleared the cache, cleared the app data and reinstalled the app entirely and it just doesn't work.

I was looking for this, thanks.

For me the Prusa App Belt Tuner didn't work at all, but Prusa is using Gates Belts like on my bicycle. I used the Gates Carbon Drive App which works just fine! Choose motorcycles/scooters. It will do 4 readings and display the average!
