RE: Prusa Core One not usable inhouse... Sorry, but the sound was to intensiv

For me, stealth mode does nothing. The motor whine and resonance are just as bad. I am beginning to wonder if there is an issue with pre-2024 stepper motors. On Reddit there has been a few threads of people discussing motor noise issues with older MK4S. So there seems be at least a few categories of issues, old MK4S machine conversions, newer MK4S machine conversions, kit machines, and pre-assembled. I think for Prusa to make steps forward, they need to start categorizing where parts came from and potentially their age.

RE:

I solved the whine issue. It was the MK4 stepper motors.

There are a few posts around here and Reddit saying people replaced their motors and the machine was much quieter. I can confirm.

If you upgraded your MK3 to an MK4 sometime before 2025, I strongly recommend buying replacement X/Y motors and the accelerometer kit. If your motors have "Prusa i3" on them, replace them! Sitting 5 feet away, I can barely hear the printer, and not at all if I have headphones on. Before I could hear the printer over my headphones with music.

Hello,

that sounds very interesting for me. What labels are on your new motors?

Maybe it's due to a bad batch of motors and not the motors as a whole. I have the Original Prusa i3 motors and after phase stepper tuning with the accelerometer my printer is very quiet. It's certainly not loud enough that it has to be in another room. I didn't have the motor whine to begin with but I did have the resonance issue everyone else has been reporting.

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with the noise from your Prusa Core One. It can definitely be a challenge to have a 3D printer running in a shared living space.

As others have pointed out, there are some great solutions to this problem. A well-built enclosure can make a huge difference, as it not only contains the sound but also helps with print quality. Another common approach is to look into silent stepper drivers. While it requires some technical know-how, it can drastically reduce the noise level.

My new Core One was atrociously loud. But now after two large demo prints at full speed (stealth made little difference in noise levels), the printer has quieted down some, about 47dBA in Stealth (at 1 meter), and generally under 52dBA in normal. On the other hand, my decade old Mk3 barely hits 40dBA... lol. Speed has costs.

Hate to be rude, but this reads exactly like an AI response. The Core ONE only has a "well built enclosure" and what is a "silent stepper driver" in this context?

Well, I can say, not being an AI, that my Core One was never really loud... and remains pretty quite.  Only time I had an issue was when printing the CoreBoxx... and somehow a part came off the build plate and jammed under the bed... it was the largest mess I've ever seen on a 3D printer... and all of the adjustments had to be recalibrated.  (literally)  ...and it's still nice and quiet. I think it's even more quiet than the H2D I've got....

Glad I came across this thread and realised it wasn't just me. My old Mk4 sat about 2 feet behind me and never bothered me once wrt noise. The Core One is in another room and I can still hear it and it's an irritating noise. Worth noting it was in the same room as a laser engraver and that doesn't bother me in the same way and that’s loud 🤣. That and the constant re-homing for up to 5 minutes and when you change filament I'm sorely tempted to revert it back to a Mk4, enclose it and have done with it till there’s some sort of update or go the Creality/Bambu route for an X/Y machine. Stopped building a Prusa based XY home-brew when they announced the core one, that was a mistake, but may be the way forward using the core one bits.  Not sure these updates are what they used to be as never seemed to get much benefit out of the Mk4S update as just introduced some cooling artefacts on back corner of print and excessive cooling fan on some profiles gave bed adhesion issues in some instances until you found the right fan speed. Somehow IMO getting the motors off the metal frame would help as that seems to be the main source of excitation for the overall frame somehow replacing the pressed steel plate with a better carriage. Who was the genius who though mounting motors on pressed steel plate was a good idea? With all the connected steel panels it's a regular resonant sound box for a whole range of frequencies so guessing there’s no easy fix with most of the various solutions more being about what particular harmonics people find irritating and hence attenuated would be my guess. My personal opinion is to get the motors of the steel panels and on to something isolated or less resonant.

At over 60 years of age and born deaf if I think it's noisy then it probably is 😉 What's interesting is that my hearing aids filter regular stationary noise but don't filter the Core One. Not having an analyser can't prove but I'm guessing the non stationarity of the noise is what is making it irritating for me.

I'm in the U.S. and couldn't find any source for this here.  Anyone else find a U.S. source for these nylon blind rivets?

Looking for R3045 rivets, DigiKey lists them here.
