Mk3S to Core Printer pathway and cost?
I have a Mk3s that is sitting on the wayside. I have an MMU2S on it that I’m going to trash. I was planning on converting it to a E3D REVO nozzle system and putting it into an enclosure.
It seems that you could go from 3S to 4 and then on, but at that point, how much stuff would you toss? Seems like a Mk3 to CORE would be an interesting option considering how many are out there and how radical the machine jump is.
RE:
There is no point going MK3S to Core One.
Just get Core One directly without any upgrades.
See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.
RE:
If you look at the "Original Prusa i3 MK3/S/+ to MK4S upgrade kit" it tells you the parts it keeps from the 3 - Frame, heat bed & X/Y rods & bearings. The frame won't be used in Core & possibly not the X/Y, and with the cost of the two upgrade kits - just buy Core Kit when it turns up as it will be cheaper.
RE: Mk3S to Core Printer pathway and cost?
Thanks, that’s what I thought. My wife is getting a bit Leary of the number of printers, and I feel a bit crazy with 2xMINI, XL-5, A MK4- I have the Mk3S in storage as a backup. Not to mention two Printrbots that are in storage and are antiques. The printrbots are so old, I don’t even want to donate them. Maybe try to sell the Mk3s for cheap so somebody can get their kid it for Christmas…
RE: Mk3S to Core Printer pathway and cost?
Maybe you could do the MK4s upgrade and then eventually upgrade to the Core One and rebuild an MK3s with all the spare parts
RE: Mk3S to Core Printer pathway and cost?
I was going to upgrade my 2 Mk3s to Mk4s standard and buy prusas containers but the cost between that route and just buying 2 each of the mk4 and coreone upgrades was negligible at the time so I went with the latter path. Figure I’ll have enough of something left to build something. My only concern is I may have taken apart my 3s prematurely as I see I need to flash the mk4 before going to coreone. Hope there is a way to do that without rebuilding a old version.
RE: Mk3S to Core Printer pathway and cost?
@engage,
Yes, there is indeed a way. I wasn't paying attention when I upgraded (I thought I was already on the latest MK4S firmware) and thought I was in big trouble and would have to put the MK4S back together. The solution is to disconnect the Core One door sensor from the Buddy board temporarily so that you can update the firmware to MK4S 6.2.4. The door sensor presence is the flag to the board that it is in a Core One not an MK4S. Once you've successfully flashed 6.2.4 power off, reconnect the door sensor and you can then update to the latest Core One firmware.
Regards,
Steve
P.S. There is a thread about this somewhere on the forum and I actually left a comment to this effect on the Core One upgrade assembly manual.

Hey thanks a lot for taking the time to tell me this! Community, one of the single best reasons to buy a pruss.
