Hotend assembly install

When installing the hotend, the instructions say to allow approx. 2mm clearance.

But when it bottoms out, it looks very close to 2mm.

Is it safe to bottom out the hotend, or should we adhere to the 2mm clearance ?

RE: Hotend assembly install

Well, PRUSA support has fussed at me twice (or is it thrice) about not having it in far enough.

They were happy with this insert.

But, also look in through the idler arm. There you can see the top of the tube. Still not quite sure what they are looking for here.

The filament comes down through the hole above, past the gear, and it has to successfully feed it into the metal tube.

So the tech said this was too low ! I was having a jammed nozzle problem.

he also requested this picture. So based on these two views, he can tell if the nozzle is in far enough or not.

It doesn't have to be exactly 2mm and it's dependent on the type of nozzle that is attached to the heat block. I use the following tools when mounting the hotend which guarantees proper spacing:

CORE One Nozzle Replacement Tool

CORE One Nozzle Replacement Tool for E3D Nozzles

RE: Hotend assembly install

and REMEMBER TO TIGHTEN YOUR THUMB SCREWS !!!  😓

Cause if you don't, the entire hot end can drop out into the piece you are printing. I was about 3" into the large Gnome print... the entire head dropped down and melted its way into the piece.  Boy was that stuck.

I would conversely add that one must remember to loosen the thumb screws before removing the nozzle lest one damage both the thumb screws and the nozzle heat break tube. I may have done that once….

At least the melted on piece fell off after when the hot end was reconnected and heated... but it took 15 minutes breaking away all of the surrounding filament to get the melted blob and the hot end separated from the rest of the part.
