Filament Blob Forming Around Nozzle – Need Help

Hey everyone, I’m new to 3D printing and could use some help.

I’m running into a strange issue where filament builds up around the nozzle and eventually forms a big blob of material. This has now happened twice, even though the print before worked perfectly.

I’m using PLA that was dried and stored properly in my Polymaker container. The printer is set up in my workshop, which has relatively high humidity—around 60%.

Any idea what could be causing this? Really appreciate any suggestions!

You have a small blob of doom; search here under that name to find how others have dealt with them.

They are less frequent nowadays as recent printers take care of first layer settings so the commonest cause is now poor adhesion due to dirty print-sheets, very often fingerprints.

Search here for threads about bed cleaning - I would use dishwashing detergent (Dawn/Fairy) and very HOT water.

Yes, there are a few signs that humidity might be having a detrimental effect but this is not the cause of your current problem.

Hello there!

First of all, remove the silicone cap from the heatblock assembly and warm up the nozzle to 170 C. After a couple of minutes that blob will be easier to remove from the assembly with a pair of pliers or something. Then purge some filament a few times, just to make sure that there is no filament stuck.

I would assume that your problem is that the first couple of layers don't stick to the sheet. Try cleaning carefully with IPA before each print. Also, from this

I would say that you have some extrusion problems.

Lastly, is that part crooked normally or is it somehow damaged?

Thank you both. That was really helpful. I think it was actually the bed. Once everything got cleaned and I removed the blob all further prints worked out great again
