Need help using Raspberry Pi 4 w/Raspberry Pi cam on XL

Hello, I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction here.

We recently got an XL and we want to have a camera.  From what we read, it looked like we need a Raspberry Pi to accomplish this, so we bought a Pi 4 and a camera.  But, then it looks like that is not supported by the XL after all.

Then we saw this post on Reddit where they suggest running Prusalink / Prusalink web on a Pi with an XL in order to make this kind of a setup work.  I am a noob, so I know I am getting into a complicated area that there are no specific instructions for, but it sounds to me like this could basically work.

So, if someone here has a good idea how this could be done and give me a little direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

I know there is the "spare smart phone" method, which I can do if this direction fails, and I do not want to use Octoprint.

Thanks

-JCL

It depends what you are trying to do.  Simplest is just to set up any old webcam and point it at the printer.  A raspberry Pi is fine for this.

I am currently using Octoprint with a XL. Appears to work well with a camera (Raspberry Pi Cam 3). I have only had the XL for about a week but a long time Octoprint user. So far only issues I had was needed to disable Binary G code in the Slicer. In Prusa Slicer, Configuration, Preferences, Other, uncheck Use Binary G-code when printer supports it.

I am testing the BGCode plugin that allows to print with Binary G-Code and seems to work. But I would disable Binary-G to start and then you can install the plugin and test. Also using Spaghetti Detective (Obico ) on all my printers and it works great.

Enjoy the XL.

Thank you for this, do you have any pictures of what the camera view looks like?  We have been going with a posable arm so that we could fine tune the position of the camera, even for specific jobs.
