You could use a 4mm diameter X 20mm long screw instead of the #6.

Ok, so 3/4" is the length, and #6 says something about thickness?

Here is a chart on sizes. I don't know if there is a 3.5mm diameter screw? If not jumping up to a 4mm diameter should work if the head is no larger than 7mm. The countersink is 7mm in diameter and 4.8mm deep.

RE:

I was considering a "soft" enclosure. It could just drape around the frame and have a tent top. Cost would be virtually nothing and to access the printer, just lift the plastic. The plastic sheet could be held in place with magnets.

A large cardboard box, is probably more easily achievable and you could cut doors in the side for access...

The problem with cardboard is that a very large box would be required. I'd have to order a refrigerator to get one that big. Plus it would be hard to see what's going on inside. Maybe a hybrid solution of cardboard and plastic sheets? The back and most of the sides are already covered. I'd leave them alone

Yes but if you own Prusa XL, there is no other solution than an overengineered enclosure 😉

I might try that until I can build a more permanent option.  Thanks for the inspiration.  I think foam board is also an option.

I can scrounge large cereal box's from the local shop, foam board is more difficult...
🙂

Funny.  I might take quite a few cereal boxes to make an enclosure for the XL, but then again it would be free.

Just remember the XL is a very big printer. I don't think it is possible to make the enclosure and smaller or neater than this.

This enclosure uses the footprint of the printer. Excluding the side spool holders and the backside electronics. The measurements for the enclosure are 665mm deep X 965mm tall X 515mm wide. It is big but as small as I could make it. With the removable panels and removable top everything is accessable.

I am known for over engineering things but that is ok. In the long run everyone appreciates it. Since this project is winding down I have learned a lot about the printer and it has been great with 0 issues. Right now the XL is printing the final part of the framework. All that will be left to print will be some accent parts, a few panel holders, T2020 end caps and some other accessory parts in the future.

I would recommend that everyone should try a project like this. Definitely a most challenging project you have to be devoted too.

I assembled the two upper removable T2020 panels this weekend. They will be installed after I print the small holders for the framework.

Regardless, I'm going to wait for Prusa to develop a solution and in the meantime, use plastic as a tent.

Hopefully, Prusa is going to spend a LOT of time getting the firmware issues resolved first. It seems a big buggy. Yesterday I was doing a print for the third time (trying to get the settings right) and the machine just froze in the middle of a print. The filament just kept oozing out of the nozzle but the tool didn't move. I had to kill it.

Ha that's the whole point of owning one! Making things you can't buy. Make your own. That's what it is all about!! 😎 😎 😎

Just a quick pic checking the fit of one of the upper acrylic panels.

That has to be a very expensive and heavy enclosure.

Not that heavy considering how large and heavy the printer is. Cost? I will post the numbers and parts list/ with costs when I am  done. The acrylic is only 1/8 inch thick. I didn't need to be any thicker.

Okay today all the framing has been completed! There are just some small parts to print.

I am also still deciding how to treat the vented area on the back of the printer. As mentioned before there are attachment points located on the rear framework

Perhaps a HEPA filter and use it as the outflow? Air in from the bottom and out through the middle of the back. Seems like a good flow to keep drafts off the model.

I finished printing the small panel flip holders this morning. I installed them as well as the top panel, left upper panel, and the upper right panel. I am presently printing some of the accent parts which will take a few days. I also have to print a few alignment templates for these parts.

I know others have had some issues with the XL but honestly it has been doing a great job on all my parts so far. I am getting close to 300hrs of printing so far.

A few pics of today's work. Enjoy!

A pic of how the panel holders look. There are 4 for each T2020 acrylic panels.

A pic of the top panel.

A few miscellaneous pics.

@MME Are you going to upload this to Printables when you finish.  I would add a list of materials.

Yes that is the plan. I have a list of small changes I need to do first. These are small updates that I feel a good changes. So I will have to redo some of the STLs first.  I will also have a supply list with approximate costs. (Time frame?)I am guessing sometime next month I will publish everything as soon as I can.
