Here is my weekly add-on. Hahaha

Anyway I was tired of not having anywhere to put tools and parts like the knobs and upper panel locking handle. So since I am a glutton for punishment I sat down yesterday and did the CAD for the side tool holder. Here is the finished part. Printed in PLA. The XL did a great job. Printing time at .20 mm layer height was 16 hours.

The tool holder with a 15mm brim.

This is the installation of the tool holder. It only takes 2 m8 rollin T3030 spring nuts and 2 M8 x 12 hex head screws.

And the full installed tool holder.

@MME: I am just sorting things out, if I will get a BlazeCut for my future enclosure or not. I found out, that Prusa is also selling a T033E version for the MK3/4 enclosure. The package includes two metal brackets for the BlazeCut tube. You should have in mind, that a printed bracket might not work in a case of fire and the BlazeCut tube will fell off its position before it is released and might not extinguish the fire.

Although the top of the enclosure is the ideal place for the tube, it might be better to install it on one of the XL metal side arms with a metal fixture.

The BlazeCut plastic melts at 120C. Their high temp wire ties well above that. The ASA melts at 240C -260C. Even though PLA softens starting at 60c it doesn't melt till 160-180. I would think if there were a fire the BlazeCut would burst first. I know on printables there are a few printable brackets for the BlazeCuts.

One other note. I did think about mounting it on the upper metal rail shield but it is rather narrow. Plus there wouldn't have been enough room between the Nextruder  and the BlazeCut with a bracket.

Ideally it should be mounted above the electronics which would be on the back or the center of the top diagonally. I just felt with the active heat bed and Nextruders if there were a to be a fire it would be on the inside near the top since this would be the hottest area.

You are on the English forum. In any case I think it isn't really helping since the XL generally has no problem with an unstable frame. Therefore this won't really help and this is also why Prusa did not do it. The upside of the current design is that it is much easier to operate without the extra frame parts.

sorry false language my fault. It's for the case one wants all spools on one side of the printer. it was discussed in another string of the forum like an addendum in vertical will not be negative but perhaps not absolutley necessary

RE: Ideas to make enclosure for XL Multi Tool

Hey everyone. I haven't posted much lately as I have been testing and trying to develope a mounting system for a heater for the enclosure. I have found that preheating  the enclosure to 45C works much better for ASA prints. I had a small heater that I use for my smaller DLP printers. It works well in a small space like the DLP printers but does not work in the larger enclosure for the XL.

So the search was on for a small heater. I tried a few and ended up with the one below in the photo. It is a Amazon brand heater. It is relatively small but heats up the enclosure nicely. I am now developing a outside the glass mount for it. It looks like it will be a 4 piece mount. It will have 2 parts for the housing a inside mounting frame and a gate to close it off when not in use. The mount will fit perfectly above the hepa filter on the lower right side panel.

Here is the cad of the mount for the heater. The outside of the mount will be printed in two pieces then there is a inside mounting plate and a gate for closing it off when not in use.

In the pic below the heater on the right is the heater I will use. It is a Amazon Basics 500 watt brand heater. It measures 15.24cm x 14.9cm x 8.6cm so it is not very big.

On a side note since I installed the back lower vent cover with the silicone shield underneath the enclosure reached a temp of 50C printing a ASA project after being preheated and then just the heat from the printer itself.

Presently I am printing the first ASA part for the heater mount

Today's print is a little longer than the previous ASA prints. The temp is up to 52C. I am going to leave it alone for now to see if it climbs much more.  I would like the enclosure to stay below 55C or 125.6F. It's a good test for this prototype enclosure.

I think you've built the most impressive enclosure I've seen to date. Must have been a proper labour of love!

I did have a question: my 3D printer will be in an unheated garage, so I'm assuming there will be a lot more heat loss through the winter months. What do you reckon your enclosure would get up to if it/the printer was outside at say 0 - 10 degrees celsius? Not sure if there is a way to calculate expected heat loss?

From a max temperature perspective (say during the summer), is there a temperature that the inside of the enclosure should stay under?

I think if you had a heater and thermostat not much. Without it's hard to say. Yesterday when I started to preheat mine with a heater it was 26C once I took the heater out after 30 min it was 45C and climbed to 52C max . As the bed lowered it went down to 50C and stayed there. You could add some thin foam to help keep the temp up.  For what I print 45C to 50C seems to work out well.

My Bambu’s live in the garage in the UK and they sit at 20-25c in the colder months. Perfect temp really and this is where the enclosed printer really works. It’s not just got higher temp materials

Hey guys,

Have you seen my design?

I took the time to prototype and iterate everything and also made a building manual! Last, I have communicated with an aliexpress store to offer full kits of all hardware and acrylic to make it accessible worldwide!

I know you are trying to sell things but quit putting your adds on others threads they created. It's makes you look bad and desperate.

RE:

As many of you know I have been working and testing  my enclosure for sometime now. I have recently completed closing it in pretty air tight so the temp will climb to about 52C and hold.

The issue is that now anything over 45-46 C the filament drags in the long PTFE tubes and the friction and heat seems to stop or hinder the extrusion process. This is with ASA. The higher the temp the faster this happens.

There are no issues with PLA or lower enclosure temps with lower temp filament.

I have tried both Nextruders and get the same result. At higher temps the higher temp filament stops wanting to feed. So what happens is the machine continues to print without any filament feeding into the nozzle.

If you look at the pic below you will see at some point the filament cannot be pulled through the long PTFE tubbing. The feed wheel just spins when it can't pull the filament through. I will have to do some more testing with the XL to see how this can be resolved.

So what is the cure for this issue?

1. Use larger PTFE tubing between the filament sensor and Nextruders. Go from 2mm id to 3mm id ?

2. Don't use any PTFE tubing except at the Nextruders and the filament sensor.

I hate to tighten the feed gear as they have been working just fine.

You can see where the feed wheel just keeps spinning on the filament because it can't pull it through the long tubbing.

For me it seems that in cause of higher temperatures the filament becomes softer and perhaps takes up more moisture as result of kondensation and temp differences between inside and outside of tube.

taking bigger tubes can reduce the adhesision between filament and tube. Perhaps the tubes became a bit stiffer, think only a try can show if it get better.

good luck.

Or use low friction tubes like this:
