Grid infill — why, oh why????

I'm working on a new multi-material design and tried to test print it on my XL four, five times, each time it crashed and burned with layer shifts.

Finally went back to Prusaslicer and checked my settings, and sure enough I had used the standard SOLUBLE INTERFACE print profile, which, of course, uses — GRID infill 🤬

Changed it to Cubic, printed perfectly fine on first try. I use custom profiles with Cubic infill on all my printers but had forgotten to create them for soluble profiles.

Why, oh why, does Prusa INSIST on using Grid as default in all their profiles??? Nothing but issues with it, especially with anything but PLA — I'm looking at you, PETG, in particular!

I mean, I know why—it shaves a few seconds of print time, and apparently in today's world, speed is all that matters, and quality is for old farts like me ☹️

I have no idea why, I never use grid.

I've watched many videos that compare the infills and strength, and imo hands down the best overall infill is rectalinear.  It's up there with the stronger infills as far as strength, prints fast, doesn't abuse the printer with a bunch of crazy print head movements, and it's the only infill you can use over 90% (not that this is normally necessary)

So I say rectalinear for the win.

RE:

Have you looked at this thread?
  https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/issues/4465

There are two separate issues that are currently causing layer shifts.  One is "new" (accumulation error), but the other is a regression.  Both cause layer shifts.  The "new" one is more about gyroid infill and other repetitive, wavy movements like "fuzzy skin".  But the regression (whatever it is) is also causing problems with other infills like grid and cubic.

My point:  Yes, there are collision problems with grid that can cause layer shifts, that may be what you are seeing, and I agree that Grid should not be the default (I edit the PrusaSlicer files after every release to make gyroid default).  BUT... Right this moment, with firmware 6.2.0 and 6.2.1, there are two known firmware issues that may cause layer shifts.

Oh I know those issues—unfortunately I have run into them myself several times now. Why they released 6.2.1, a firmware version with minor changes, without fixing that big problem I cannot comprehend.  Pretty sure though that in this particular case, it was just "grid being grid".
