Waves on perimeter

Hello! I've contacted the support a few of times in the past weeks about issues I have with my XL5T where the perimeters are quite wavy. It also tends to be more severe on the right side of the bed. It's not related to the tool as it happens with all of them.

I also have an XL2T right next to it and it has no issues at all (they're on separated furnitures so each vibrations don't impact the other). FYI I'm at the very latest FW version for both my XL(6.4.0+11974).

Following the support chats I've done many things:

  • loosen and retighten all screws related to the Z axis while the printer is moving (top screws + trapezoidal nuts while moving down, motor screws while moving up)
  • tool offset calibration
  • dock calibration
  • cleaning most things
  • lubricating the 3 bronze blocks on each extruders
  • lubricating all axis
  • verify the belt tensions (also printed the homing tower gcode which got printed quite perfectly)
  • did a hard reset so had to redo the complete calibrating afterwards

In my opinion it seems more like a hardware issue given the full reset did not change anything, and since my XL2T has no issue with the same FW, but I can't see what. The printer is stable and with exact same setup as the XL2T (above two 2x2 KALLAX with concrete slabs above to make everything stable), I've also checked under the each of its feet if there could be any debris. Also each prints from the pictures above are from files that I've already printed many times before and always without any waves.

Do you have any further ideas of what could be wrong? I've had that for 1-2 months now and I've had the printer working flawlessly since I got it more than a year ago up until when this issue started.

Thanks for your help!

Maybe its Firmware related? 6.4.0 seems to cause Problems for some with multitool (me included).

Try 6.2.6

I've not seen this - are the ripples micro layer shifts, does the protrusion on one side become a depression on the other?  or does a protrusion run around the entire print?

And do the ripples from different heads match when printing multi-material or does each head have it's own  pattern?

Cheerio,

RE: Waves on perimeter

Is the wavy-ness the same on X-oriented and Y-oriented perimeters (and diagonal ones) the same?

The waves seem quite regular regardless of the tool, on the first picture we can see that the lines are quite consistent on the body regardless of the color so I would suppose it's not a tool issue, more something around the bed and axis.

It's also indeed on all sides, though I don't have a part anymore to verify whether a protrusion on one side goes depression on the other. I'll see when I'll make further tests.

Also something to note is that the lines are straight but not horizontal, they're not parallel with the bed. On the third picture we can see that the lines are going in a slight diagonal, higher on the left and going a little down towards the right.

Could it be that the printbed is somehow wobbling in XY-Direction when moving up and down? This is the only reason for this behaviour that I can think of right now.

Can you check that? And also wether the distance between the waves matches the pitch of the Z-Axis leadscrews?

Hello! Sorry for the lack of answer, I've made further tests and ended up doing a firmware downgrade back to the 6.2.6 and this has solved the issue. The issue still happened on the printer before the downgrade, I just did it without touching anything else and this issue disappeared.

I'll wait for a newer version before going higher again, and will keep the 6.2.6 aside in case I'll again need to rollback.

Thank you so much for helping me!

Amazing and reassuring at the same time 🙂

Even if Prusa releases new, improved firmware in the short term, I will not stray from the “most stable version ever” (i.e., 6.2.6). Unless other users convince me with positive feedback that the new firmware is usable again after the “backtracking,” and at the same level where 6.2.6 ended.
