RE: USB error mid print

Actually... Now that I come to think about it: I did have the issue last week once, but I was able to resume by unplugging and re-plugging. So at least no damage was done.

RE: USB error mid print

Okay - I am now in a totally broken state. No matter what I do (clean up the USB drive, use a new one with the same files, ..) - it claims that it cannot read the USB drive. Great. 10hrs print time, ~300g filament behind me and it's simply broken.

Sorry - but this SW bug needs to be fixed. I will see that I can go back to 6.0.0. alpha. But this is really sad.

RE: USB error mid print

Same here, it is happening more often. 5 times past 3 days. Last night stopped and made me miss 10 hours of print time for an order that had to be shipped today. Tried different USB drives, still happening. Now way to recover print… till now!

I found a crazy way to recover. Unplug the printer, plug it again. It will restart! But watch out, nozzle temp is now room temp… so quickly pause print, go to tune and set nozzle temp manually.

This is super clunky. My current 10 hour print, has now stopped twice and been recovered with this method. Now hoping it finishes.

I don’t know what happened, what has changed. My XL was super reliable 2 weeks ago and now this. Changed the USB drive. Nothing else has changed, same firmware version.

RE: USB error mid print

JuanV, that is interesting in deed! (the fact that it was 2 weeks ago stable with the same firmware & the fact that it survives the power cycle...).

1. If it is a recent change, then it would support my previous theory that it might be related to PrusaConnect as the server side seems to be constantly changing these days.

2. If the power cycle was making the printer continue, then the server side connection must have triggered the print, which means that there was likely a timeout and the server is "driving the print". (odd? Surprising?)

3. It could also be a bad remote connection: I was trying to reach the printer while I was at a network wise spotty place. So if e.g. the server was requesting an image of a gcode file or such, and in the middle of the request the client (my phone) disconnected, the server / printer might get blocked until the handshake / data transfer has been done. But if it never does, it could wait there forever, keeping the file locked. (I mention that as I was possibly running yesterday exactly into this as I had a totally spotty network there).

Either way - I disabled Prusa Connect again and printed over night the same part 16hr part again without a problem. The only thing which speaks against this is that others have tried the same and for them it didn't resolve the problem. As such it is likely that there are either more problems - OR - an underlying library change which has an impact on all I/O operations and each of us has a different way to trigger it. *sigh*

Either way - I am fairly certain (thinking about the failure yesterday) that in my case the remoting into PrusaConnect, checking on the status of the printer, together with a bad network connection was causing the problem.

RE: USB error mid print

Yeah, I have completely disabled PrusaConnect, PrusaLink, and wi-fi.  I'm doing everything by (ugh) USB drive.  I even reformat the drive each time I use it to ensure no corruption. No good.  It still does the same thing.  It happens at least once every 8 hours of print time.

Unfortunately, github developers have not even looked at my bug report, let lone scheduled it for investigation.  I'm so dissapointed in Prusa right now.

Oh darn. That really sucks. Did you try to ping the Prusa customer support about this?

I did mention this again in another thread with them. Let's hope that we get some movement on this soon.

Im on the new 6.0.1 as well - will investigate further - good luck us all :/

@corycwagner I joined your bug report - thanks a lot

RE: USB error mid print

Hello. This issue occurred once on my XL 5T after approximately 3 hours of 2 days print. I then tried re-plugging the USB drive, reformatting it, and uploading the G-code to the USB drive again. I even tried using a different USB drive. However, nothing helped. After restarting the printer, it started printing from the same USB, which was apparently corrupted. I uploaded the file via Connect. If you are experiencing this issue without Connect, we can eliminate it as a possible cause. We are investigating the firmware, as the USB drives are obviously fine. After firmware version 6.0.1, we have not experienced any further issues. It has been quite challenging to fix something that we cannot replicate.

RE: USB error mid print

I certainly understand the dilemma.  I think that the USB is a red herring.  I have turned off Prusa Connect, Prusa Link, and WiFi.  I have tried several different USB drives and reformated them in between prints.  I still get the stopping mid-print.  I don't get any error whatsoever.  If I induce a power panic, the print will restart where it left off.

I can't find any coorelation except that it happens, for me, during multi-color prints that are long.  It usually happens somewhere between 6-10 hours into the print, but it has also happened in as little as 3 hours. I have yet to get through a long print where it hasn't stopped.

I have also created a ticket and am willing to help where ever I can.

Thanks, that's appreciated 🙂 I think I have a reproducer now, so let's see if it reproduces the same issue as you're having.

RE: USB error mid print

I dunno.   I just had to re-format my USB due to corruption.  It hasn't happened to me since 6.1 but obviously given the posts that didn't fix it.

FWIW, my failures have not been during multi-color.

RE: USB error mid print

Awesome! Many thanks for having a look and getting this addressed!

I did leave a few comments further up. Hope that helps. But once you figure it out - would be great if you could quickly mention what the problem was!

RE: USB error mid print

If you encounter this error, please provide us these following details:

  • How did you upload the file: via Connect, PrusaLink, or USB?
  • What printer model are you using and what FW?
  • When this error happened (Print time Start -> Error and overall print time).
  • Were you able to resolve the issue? If so, how did you do it?

You can try re-plugging the USB, reformatting it, using the same G-code on a different USB drive, or restarting the printer (if the printer continues after a power panic), or let us know, what other things you tried, that might be helpful.

Thank you all.

RE: USB error mid print

My latest one:

6.0.1, uploaded via prusa slicer via upload and print. Single color, PETG.

I tried: to remove everything but the print file, copied that to another usb drive, had only that file on there, tried  plugging in cables in between, and many more things. But it didn't resolve the usb error.

I was not aware of the restart.

RE: USB error mid print

Just happened a few hours ago:

Uploaded via newely formated USB; prusalink&Prusaconnect disabled

XL 5T (upgraded from 2T); FW 6.01

Printing just stopped; 8 hours into a 26 hour print; no error, the screen says 89% (it isn't that far); it acts like it is still printing, but it isn't.  The extruder is just sitting on the model where it last printed.

As usual, I resolved it by switching off the power, waiting a few seconds, then turning it back on (switch on the power supply).  After inducing power panic, the printer re-homes itself and resumes printing right where it left off.  Interestingly, the percentage complete on the screen drops to 35%, which is probably correct.

I've had this happen with with every new USB stick I bought. I've been reformatting in between prints to ensure no file corruption. I have also tried printing from prusa connect and prusa link, via both ethernet and wi-fi.  Same problem.  I have looked in the logs, and there seems to be no indication anything has happened whatsoever.

I also tried to use my old octoprint device and bypassing USB altogether, that also failed at about the same rate (I gave Octoprint up after 2 failures because I realized that I could not recover the print via power panic while using octoprint).  Also, only power panic works, reseting via the reset button does not allow you to resume the print.  I originally thought the failures might be due to power surges, so I installed a Triplite UPS, that didn't help either.

So far, I've only seen the failure on very long multi-color prints, but that is pretty much all I print anyway. Also, it isn't model specific.  I've seen this happen on every long model I've printed.  And, yes, I'm slicing via prusaslicer.  Finally, it isn't a tool specific problem.  It stops while using any tool.

Hope this helps.  Let me know what I can do to help.

For what it is worth, I also just updated my MK3S to 3.5.  I have thought of swapping the screens between the 2 printers and seeing if that solves the problem.  Do you think it is worth my time to try?

Hope this helps.

RE: USB error mid print

I just walked into the room shortly after it failed, so I got some videos:

This is the state it was in when I found it failed:

Here is what it looks like as I induced a power panic:

Here is the printer restarting and resuming the print:

Hope this helps.

RE: USB error mid print

Hi, facing the same issue. XL with 5 heads 6.0.1 Software.

Issue happened on a fairly simple print without color change. Changing form printing with standard settings with input shaper and without did not change anything. With that I failed 3-5 times round about the same hight.

Reducing from 5 parts to 1 did not help. On first single part printer stopped at same hight as on 5. On second run it even did something like a crash, heard the noise, but was not able to look and see immediately. But after being able to continue print went on with offset of 30mm to the front.

Wanted to add the Code, but was not able. Therefore, I added the drawing and some shots about orientation.

Long parts are 460mm; short 150mm

Hope, that helps casing the issue on other printers earlier also, to identify issue.

RE: USB error mid print

Since 3 or 4 weeks I also suffering mid print failure with "usb file or drive error", I have tried different usb drives, replace screen and replace usb cable, at this moment.

Problem started after 6.0.0 update (i dont know if it is firware related),  From my investigation I think it is a writing problem, not reading, I have suffered this problem with many files but each file always fails at same point.

Today I get finally a 27h print after update to 6.0.2 and copy file to drive directly (before I was using prusaconnect).
