RE: USB error mid print

After months of working I finally got the USB error midprint after a day of printing today again. Yes, I did have Prusa Connect turned on - AND - the USB drive started filling up again.

So - I will have to clear up the USB drive and turning Prusa Connect off .... again. 🙁 But at least I was able to resume and therefore there is still hope that this print will make it.

So crossing fingers that the big update will address this. (I can see in Prusa Connect that a new update was coming in, but I am still hoping this print will make it).

Today I added some shielding to my LCD cable. Some copper tape wrapped around each of the 4 sections individually, starting a couple inches from either end. I would recommend some other option, or at least sending two of the sections in each direction, since the copper tape made the ribbon harder to bend and a bit thicker, it was difficult to get all the wires in the right place. For grounding I ran a wire from the shielding to the PE connector. At 5h the print was still going good, and it looks to be going good now at 7h, but I am remote now and it is hard to tell from this camera angle.

Either I didn't do the shielding right, or it isn't the (sole) cause of the USB issues, I just got a USB disconnect again today.

RE: USB error mid print

I did format my USB sticks (the Prusa ones) and only put the single bgcode file on it via PrusaLink - and so far I have a 3 day print without any error, and a 2 day print on the other one, also without an error.

I also reduced the travel accel and speeds roughly about 20% - otherwise I have lots of layer shifts. Idk but maybe that does something too here, as the cables are so close and the mainboard gets hot from the drivers.

I'm tired of it. So I am selling my 5 head. Such an expensive machine and as usual with Prusa, issues after issues after a rushed release.

3 day print, multiple USB errors.

And one toolhead crash at the typical upper right corner.

RE: USB error mid print

Did you try the latest alpha version (6.2)? It was stated that that would solve the issue.

I haven't printed anything in 2 weeks due to finishing my costume for Comic-Con, then attending and then building my XL enclosure (this weekend). Once I do the final step and check the belts, I'll be starting on next years costume parts and quite a few other projects. I'm on 6.1.3+7898 right now and will report back if I get any hangs.

So I've only had the occasional error since I got mine in July. However, after the latest firmware (6.1.3) it has now started happening on every other print at startup. (only had it happen once midprint) Always fixed by reinserting the drive and hitting continue, but this is getting annoying. Really hoping the upcoming firmware will fix this once and for all.

RE:

I haven't had a USB error since installing 6.2.0 alpha even after letting the USB fill up again, but I have had some issues with WIFI and PrusaConnect.

PrusaConnect lost connection with Error/Refused, and at the same time I noticed WIFI was having some trouble connecting. I switched to ethernet and both were fine for a bit, but after a while PrusaConnect lost connection again. Some fiddling in the network menu got it reconnected.

Tried again with 6.2 alpha. I had 4-5 successful 8+ hour prints and one print that hung up with no error but recovers after power cycle.

Ran into this issue for the first time today. Prusa XL 5TH with 6.1.2+7894

I was not able to resume the print. Every time I tried, the nozzle just lowered into the print and I got the USB error again (tried 2-3 times).

RE: USB error mid print

Having the same issue a few times per print and a few times now the print was near finished and suddenly had a massive layer shift, I’m guessing due to the usb error. I’m thinking the usb error screwing with the gcode or head location somehow causing this issue. I’ve also contacted tech support letting them know I have taken the following steps to try and remedy to problem.

-Updated to current firmware -Tried all other firmware -Hard reset and factory reset of the the printer -Full calibration -Full “slow” reformat of the usb drive -Tried using a different usb drive -Replaced xLCD and cable -Checked all boards, cables and electronics were working as expected.

They are currently sending this issue to their “XL Specialist group” for a solutions. At this point in time I 100% believe it is still a firmware issue on their end. Hope this helps people to some degree.

Installed FW 6.2 Alpha2. Still encountering USB errors (6 times on the newest alpha FW), which has led to prints being destroyed multiple times. Is Prusa actively working on a solution? This issue is very concerning.

On firmware 6.1.3 and im still getting the same error. Ordering a new usb drive. Ive been using a verbatim drive 16bg. Im wondering if because i flashed the firmware on the supplier drive it messed up the firmware. Im not sure but it was working fine a while ago. I may reflash the firmware with this drive after the print is done but i had to un pause the print 2 times already.

This is straight up horrible. Another failed 3 days print. This machine is so unreliable, it can't be used for serious jobs.

For me, this (below) has been the only time I have experienced this issue. When it happened, I tried to prepare another USB stick, but all sticks at hand were too high capacity, so I ended up just using the same USB stick and now with a lot of printing hours after, I haven't experienced the same.

RE: USB error mid print

Just to let you know guys.
I had the same error and couldn't continue . It failed at ~30% of 2d12h print job.
I installed the 6.2_Alpha firmware and repeated the print. It went smooth.
I will do more tests this weekend as I have 2  prints that will take over 14h each.
I'm going to edit this post after those prints.

However, it's really unacceptable that flagship machine worth 4000EUR has issues like that for a year since the first reportts.

RE: USB error mid print

Everybody has been having a different experience.  For me, I was seeing an error every two or three times that I tried the same print job.  So, before I restarted the same print drive over again, I started removing and reinstalling the same USB thumb drive, a Verbatim 32GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 Drive, and have gone through 6, 20-hour prints, with no errors.

Based on what I've read in this thread, I strongly suspect a hardware problem that Prusa is trying to find a firmware fix for.  That might be the best answer for everybody, but it is taking a lot longer than I would have hoped for.
