Extruder jams mid print

Hello Everyone,

I just got my XL about 2 weeks ago and am just getting started with it.  Im on my 3rd print now and I am starting to have jams with Prusa pla on one of the two extruders I have tried so far.  I remove the filament like it asks and put it back in.  Runs for a while and does it again.  Same tool head.  The first time it happened Im guessing the head had cooled and I struggled to get the filament out.  The head also was making a popping noise as it attempted to purge the filament.  Maybe stalled stepper motor or plastic gears. Second time it was warmer and was able to be pulled out.  Is this maybe a bad head heater or bad feedback to the temperature controller?  Side note, I dont think this is a feature, but after the purge is complete on a stuck filament as the head is moving back to restart printing it will squirt out around 2cm if filament.  That then hangs as a loop and is smeared into the print.  Makes a mess.

Thank you for any help!!

And a follow-up,

I just had another jam 3rd in about an hour.  The print head was still oozing pla.  I pushed the knob to start the reload, and then pressed it again and held it to try and get it to the next step.  I question if the head is really jammed.  The printer then rebooted, and then a new error message and a red screen appeared.  Marlin Request timeout.  So Im not to sure what is going on with this thing.  For band new Im a little surprised.

Just had a 4th jam.  This time on a different extruder.  Im wondering if its not the filament?  I have been printing with PLA Prusa Galaxy Black.  ID 1c7d822cb7 29.11.2024.  This material is the only common element in this now.

Thanks for any thoughs.

Poppping noises at the extruder usually indicate damp filament - it it's really bad it can contribute to jams and it always promotes oozing.

Dry your filament (plenty of threads on the forum) and try again.

Thanks Diem,

I just opened an brand new PLA from Prusa.  I have already had 2 jams with it.  I dont think its wet filament.  Unless I need to dry the vacuum sealed brand new rolls from Prusa.  Im very new to this so my understanding could be way off, but if you have wet pla dont you get stringing?

I now have tried 2 extruders and 2 filaments with no less then 5 jams.  I still cant get the machine to unload one of the extruders.  Is this maybe a firmware bug with the extruders, or my print g code causing an issue?

Thanks for the help!

You cannot assume that new filament, not even Prusament, is dry.  It was packed dry but you have no idea how long it was on the warehouse shelf or how it was treated in transit.

I still cant get the machine to unload one of the extruders

Open the nextruder - lift the catch and lower the front, and you will be able to see what's happening.

if you have wet pla dont you get stringing?

Very often; some colours (pigments) are more susceptible than others.

As you machine is new, make a note of the serial number on the back and contact Prusa Support chat who will guide you through some basic troubleshooting.

Cheerio,
