XL 2 head - printing strange circle at the end of each layer

Hi There all,

I didn't bother with the beta firmware or Alpha Prusa Slicer, but last week i updated both, and since then i'm getting a really weird thing happening !

At the end of each layer it prints a tiny circle, about 4mm in diameter.

At first i thought it was some sort of corruption in my model, so i recreated the model and it did the same thing, i've just created a few 20mm and 30mm squares by 3mm and it is doing it with these too, so not my model.

I've also tried using the non IS printer in Prusa Slicer and that is also doing the same thing !

Also if i just export the bgcode and view it with the G code viewer, there is definitely no circles going on !

Could this be some corruption in the firmware ?

Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening ?

Thanks for your help

Damian

I don't have an answer, but can you clarify if it is affecting or damaging your print at all?   Is it printing a raised circle, or just following a circular travel path before moving to the next layer?

I noticed this circular movements too. They do not harm the print. They seem to happen at least once every layer

(PS 2.7.0 FW 5.1.0)

Hi Sorry, i had added a video but for some reason it's not showing.

I've attempted to add it again.

Yes, the circle it prints is overlapping the perimeter of the print, so leaves a line all the way up the print.

I've just tried doing a totally clean install of Prusa Slicer 2.7.0 without the Input Shaping profile selected and it's doing the same thing, in fact it then did something very odd when it started to print .. it got half way through the first layer then stopped and asked to change filament ! no idea why as it wasn't supposed to !
After a reboot of the printer, it then printed without asking to change filament but is still printing the circle at the end of each layer (apart from the last layer)
I'm starting to feel that i've got an iffy printer ! 🙁

This is a new feature since PrusaSlicer 2.7.0-beta1 called helical travel move. Read the release notes to understand the feature and the reasoning behind it. Given that the nozzle lifts as it makes the circular motion, you should not see any mark from the nozzle on the existing perimeter unless perhaps your filament is oozing (eg wet, too hot, or a very oozy/stringy material).

Thanks tg73, yep i didn't read the release notes tbh !

So it can be turned off if ramping is off.

Anyway, i have reverted back to 4.7.1 firmware and 2.6.1 PS and am printing the part that i really need done so i can start my weekend project !
I'll compare the new print to the one done with 5.1.0 fw and see if the issue i was getting is still present.

All the best

Sounds like a couple issues reported on Github: https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/11761

Check to make sure "Retract on Layer Change" is checked in your Printer Settings > Extruder # > Retraction.

The new zhop movements significantly help with stringing even without a prime tower. It's best to use them if possible.

Hi, so the print came out flawlessly with 4.7.1 fw and 2/6/1 PS apart from the fact that i have a design flaw that i need to work on !

So i'm going to stick with 4.7.1 for the moment as i just want to get my project done, the main point to me forking out for Prusa XL was to do away with constantly fixing the printer so that i had more time to badly design stuff 🤣 so i'll re load the 5.1.0 fw during the next week and run some tests.

Thanks BaconFase, that gives me some pointers to work from 👍

I'll probably do a complete factory reset on everything, even PrusaConnect as that has an odd quirk where it seems to default to Flex when there is nothing loaded into the printer, not a biggie, but it just annoys me !  ... I did try using some Ninja Flex early on when i first got the XL (which was a fail due to the bowden setup) but i've no idea why PrusaConnect now thinks that's my default material 🙄

Thanks for all the help.
