Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
Well Would You?
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
Yes, I would.
Here are some of my videos using it :
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
Definitely I would buy theXL5head again. Especially that after all firmware development it still is the only 5 head multimaterial core xy on the market that has an EU and open source supporting origin . Furthermore I expect Prusa to upgrade the XL ´s nextruder to feature high flow and better even cooling. There will be quite some mechanical limitations in realizing a 360 degree cooling but that also is Prusa to find a working solution that will be upgradable. I have upgraded my MK4 to MK4S and I like optimizing my tools rather than buying new ones from changing manufacturers. I was always trusting in Prusa that the XL has come to stay as a no.1 choice and reliable work horse. Since Soft 6.0 everything really was under 100% control.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
Yes i would. I was a day one order and got my 5XL with some issues which i complained about. Now its working as it should and with the benefits of having multiple heads it will be difficult for me to go back to a single head. As i posted multiple times PETG with PLA supports or ABS with PETG supports its truly a game changer for me. Im not sure that i would go for a single head XL though if my only concern was size.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
I dont think my wife would be happy if I bought a second XL. But she might be ok with it 🙂
I love my XL.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
I would if I had the need. But if they offered an XXL I would buy that. The XL is just a tad small every once in a while.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
I started my 3D printing jurney when the MK2 was the thing. Upgraded that to a MK3 and later to a MK3S. I also had the MMU1 (which I never build because of the bad reliability) and upgraded that to the MMU2.
I hesitated on the first day the XL came out but shotly after ordered the XL5T.
Meanwhile my MK3S with MMU2 including the self made IKEA LACK is sold and I only have the XL5T. I'm very happy and would buy it again. Main reasons: open source, EU made, Prusa will always make sure that there is an upgrade path.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
I would buy it again, but I'm also disappointed.
- I was shocked that prusa slicer is not able to slice for different nozzle diameters. One of the reasons I bought it was to print structural parts with a thick, and details with a thin nozzle -> does not work, no info available if it ever will. I do not care about multicolor. 5 toolheads do now save me some time for swapping nozzles manually but everything else I use it for could be done with any IDEX machine. In my opinion 5 toolheads are not worth it unless multicolor is important (or slicing for different nozzle sizes will work)
BTW Simplify3d slices perfectly well for different nozzle sizes, but the XL profile is kinda buggy. I hope they'll fix it.
- I ran into problems like XL dropping toolheads mid print for no reason. Did not happen since the last firmware update, still wild it happened in the first place.
- I hope the machine will become better with firmware updates in the future. Most important point for me would be a failed print recovery feature, as proposed in another thread (start from defined z-height)

No.
no real need for some long answer.

I'm with @per-s - somehow the XL, with which I have had no problems that weren't my own fault (forget which toolhead should be loaded with which filament is favourite) is sometimes a fraction too small, so an XXL would be even better. I contribute very little to the XL problem threads because I have no experience of them, for me it has been even more of an 'It just works' workhorse than the Mk3.
Cheerio,
RE:
when the machine was manufactured could be a factor obviously i have a early 2023 machine. later production machines came with changes and possible brain changes on the PCB.
everyone's experience has been very varied.
but when asked directly. No would still be the answer.
because of my experience with the MK3 line of printers and what has happened with the XL since 2019 i would also say 'No' again to future prusa products unless i see a big shift in the company.
the last 6-7 years of how prusa has been handling releases stopped me from even bothering with the MK4 line of printers.

XL 5 heads is my first printer and I love it. I bought it when it was still beta, but was delivered in one of the last round before it was GE, with .4 nozzles, so I guess I had a real "production" one.
Totally a yes.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
I would. I like the ability to mix different materials such as TPU/PETG or using PLA for PETG support. Also, I do production runs, so I can use the spool join feature and eliminate some down time. Both of mine have had some issues at first, but they were resolved and work great now.

Well Would You?
Yes, but if you'd asked me 12 months ago the answer would have been "maybe".
The XL had a bumpy release. The firmware was not ready. The hardware had issues. The slicer was broken. It's a lot better now but as somebody who pre-ordered and received one of the earliest printers it was a really rough 12 months.
But now everything works as advertised and I've forgiven (if not forgotten) the past 12 months. It's an expensive printer - if you just need multi-filament printing you'll get much better value from a Bambu - but for multi-material printing it's either this or a Voron, and I don't have the patience for a Voron.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
We like our Original Prusa XL 5H so much that we just ordered an Original Prusa MK4S (in kit form) to go with it.
We'll be putting it in the opposite corner from the XL of the wall of our living room where the XL and the two Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultras are.
(The Elegoo printers are inside the outdoors-venting "fume hood" we built to accommodate them and the resin wash/cure stations.)
We only got in to 3D printing three months ago, but we're having a lot of fun.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
No. To this day, issues. The amount of waiting, an outdated technology on top of that, so much tinkering that is unneeded and for a price to have to pray each day that there won't be whatever issue? No, definitely not.
RE: Would You Guys Buy the 5Head XL Again?
No, five months of issues. Slow customer support. It has cost us dearly. Getting close to starting a chargeback from my card company.
