UPS Recommendation for the XL?

What are you using as a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply, not shipping) for the XL?  The APC 600 isn't big enough.

RE:

I have a Cyberpower 1500 powering my my XL5T.  The XL when heating the full bed can draw 600-650 watts.  The UPS reports it can power it for 6 minutes.  That's plenty for my needs (I have a whole-house generator which will be running in about 30 seconds.)   BTW, I've run my XL, a MK4 and a MK3 all at the same time through it (I do stagger the pre-heating however).  I rarely have all 3 running but 2 is normal.  So far, so good.

RE: UPS Recommendation for the XL?

My standard for everything in the house is to get some variation of the APC 1500.   There's a few floating around, like Smart UPS 1500, etc.   I have at least 5 or 6 of them around the house for various things.  I've not had any issues.  Though I mostly use them just to condition the power and provide insurance in case there's a power blip.  Where I live we don't tend to get actual outages very often(knock on wood).   I too have the 5 tool and two MK4 printers and I run them all at the same time.  I'm probably going to buy a second one just for the XL, but it's a pain since you need to consider swapping the batteries every couple years and they don't all use exactly the same battery packs.

I've been running a 1000VA/600W unit on my XL and it works fine. Full tile heating to 85C, no problem.

Thanks.  I forgot that I had an old APC 1500 in a storage room.  I replaced the batteries and hooked the XL up to it.  Runs like a dream.

I have two MK3+ units, each hooked to its own APC 600.  When I ran the XL off of the 600, the 600 frequently sounded overload alarms, especially if one of the MK3s were running on the same UPS.  I now have a PrintDry Pro 3 that I'll probably hook to the 1500 with the XL, and we'll see if that causes any alarms.

Anyway - thanks for your input!

I remember there being some extra tinkering needed to use a UPS with the MK3 because of the power panic feature. Does the XL not have power panic, or has it been changed to seamlessly work with UPSes?

I've been running this same UPS with a MK3S+ for quite a while. I don't have to worry about power panic as I have a standby generator that starts within 30 seconds of a power failure. The UPS with my MK3 worked just fine with the numerous power problems my area is plagued with.

RE: UPS Recommendation for the XL?

Yes, tinkering is required for many UPS to avoid power panic - see here for lots of detail. The power panic happens when the UPS switches over to battery supply due to the brief glitch in the supply.

NB: I've not run a UPS on the XL myself. All respondents above - have you tried switching off mains power to the UPS during a print (ie, simulate a power cut)? Do you get a power panic (ie, the printer thinks the power was cut)? You should test this, as the power panic will require human intervention to restart the print. Some UPS can be configured into an "always regenerate" mode which might work better (but is less efficient, hence often not the default on the UPS).

RE: UPS Recommendation for the XL?

Just installed this for the XL over this past weekend.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00429N19W?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

First test was to run a print that heated the entire bed (PETG @85C) and pull the UPS plug from the wall.  The XL didn't even notice so I can say with confidence it works well since power panic was not activated and the printer kept on rattling 🤣 along.  Note the only devices plugged into the UPS were the XL and a Raspi 3b+ but the UPS wasn't stressed at all.

For what it's worth, this was not the case with the MK3 using a smaller version of this same UPS.  For that one I had to disconnect power panic which I'm not sure is an option on the new buddy boards.  That printer/UPS combo hasn't been tested since it was upgraded to an MK3.9 (note to self added...)

Would you please identify the make/model of the UPS?  The link you provided to Amazon did not work for me - could be a problem with different countries.  I think it would be useful for this thread if you would be so kind as to share the device specs.

Thank you.

You should try your UPS test multiple times.  I went through this with my Mk3.  Whether power panic triggers is very much dependent on when in the AC power cycle the UPS switches.  My Mk3 would only trigger power panic 30-40% of the time I pulled the cord on the UPS.

RE: UPS Recommendation for the XL?

For giggles, I just tested my XL hook up to a UPS. I unplugged it while it was running an auto-home and nothing. No panic. No pausing. No red screen of death.

So if you're seeing power panic when your UPS kicks in, your UPS is poor or damaged and not providing a pure sine wave.

RE: UPS Recommendation for the XL?

I finally ran a test on the MK3.9 with the bed and nozzle heating.  The MK3.9 is running off the smaller version of the above (CP850PFCLCD PFC , 850VA/510W) and it was a no go.  It screamed for help then died.  But this also revealed the battery needs replaced so that's probably the root cause.  That's the issue running these things without a PC connected for monitoring.  It's too easy to forget about them and let the batteries die a slow death until it's truly needed.  At least that seems to be my self inflicted pattern; it's not the first time.

I know what this weeks online order will be.

RE: UPS Recommendation for the XL?

Whatever you buy put a board or some type of tray under it.  I had a CyberPower 1500 and the batteries eventually went bad (normal) and leaked (not normal).  The acid leaked out of the UPS and ruined the finish of my desk; it was being used for backup power for my computer.  I replaced it with an APC-1500.  I really feel APC's battery setup is superior so when my XL was delivered I bought another one for it.  10x easier to replace the batteries. NOTE: I am comparing a new APC to an older CyberPower unit so this observation might be obsolete as the CyberPower UPS was 5-7 years old...

RE: UPS Recommendation for the XL?

Not really the correct forum but thought I'd post it here any way.

A follow-up on my post above ( https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/700713/ about the MK39 on a UPS)

The battery has been replaced and every single time I've pulled the plug it has rebooted.  This is complete contrast to the XL, which has not had any issues at all when the UPS switches to battery.  Guessing the MK39 board has none, or less smoothing capacitance than the XL.  Oh well, at least it's on a nice surge protector 🙂
