Is anyone using the XL with Enclosure ? Does it make a difference ?
Hi Folks,
I think I am finally ready to take the plunge with the XL - two toolhead version. I am looking to this printer for mechanical parts that use PC or ABS and TPU. My question before I pull the trigger is : do I really need the enclosure ? From the pictures it looks like you can't see the part being printed with the enclosure vent up - is this correct ? For people who have the enclosure, do you find it maintains a stable temperature, and can you set the temperature of the enclosure ? Does it make a difference for materials sensitive to draft vs a simple skirt around the printed part ?
Your experience is appreciated!

For health reasons you ought to consider an enclosure regardless of how it affects the print quality. ABS is health hazardous. Unless you happen to have another venting / air-filter solution.

Yes, I have a negative pressure chamber that I have built myself. It vents to the outside, and has a heater which I can use to maintain a temp up to about 30C. This is a larger chamber, as it currently accommodates a 4S+MMU3, and two minis. Without the fan on, draft is reduced but because of the size, air circulation could potentially disrupt an ABS print. Humidity in the chamber is basically the same as outside the chamber - I have given up on trying to run in a humidity controlled environment, and just run the window AC unit on "dry" to reduce humidity about 10-15%.

I had this without an enclosure, and ABS/ASA prints were impossible.
With the enclosure they are nearly always perfect.

I bought the enclosure last year. It makes a difference printing ABS and ASA. Not perfect but better than without , yet not 730E worth of improvement. Also i get overheating problems on the heatbed in hot summer days (35 degrees ambient) that i didnt get before. Even after prusa send me a replacement board the problem persists. My opinion is because there is a difference between the "underbelly" that is better insulated with the "accordeon" part to the top that have various airflows. And since there no heat sensors in the actual enclosure and it depends on sensors on idle toolheads (i thing) the temperature control is problematic. If you live in a cold climate it may be ok for you. I had problems also with my mk3s (heat crip) and mmu2s (stringy tips) due to high ambient temperature. If i live the door open it works but then it beat the purpose of the enclosure and i get more warping.
There is no better alternative but as i said in a previous post this enclosure it looks like an afterthought and its overpriced for being a plexiglass box with metal frame. No active or proper temperature controlling. The top part is full with gaps. Again 730E and prusa didn't bother to have a proper heating sensor. Unfortunately there is no other choice, as far as i know, but its NOT an enclosure on par with a 4k printer and with a price tag of 730E without shipping cost

Thanks for that - I was concerned that would be the case. I think for now, I am going to abandon the idea of multimaterial supports for my advanced material printing, and just go with the CoreOne instead (without my MMU3 for now, which I will keep on the MK4S). A lot went into that, but ultimately, the large footprint means that I can't run the XL in my existing chamber, and the price difference between a two head XL and a single head Core One isn't justified by the speed for this one type of specialty print.
