I did it the old fashioned way: By making a math error and not checking my work!

The error was adding the $199 deposit to the price, not to the balance owing. Thus, my price is $199 too high because the deposit  was counted twice. Oops and sorry.

Actually, you left an important item out that could still cost… the bench or table you put it on. I plan on getting a harbor freight tool chest… another $300.

LOL I hardly see Prusa having to factor the cost of your home/office furniture into their math.

RE:

I was trying to figure out why yours was so much more expensive, but then I realized yours is fully assembled. For comparison, here's the breakdown for my 5 tool semi-assembled shipped to the US.

$3,499.00 - Printer
$132.66 - Shipping (DHL)
$108.47 - Import duties (3.1% of declared value)
$48.67 - DHL fee for filing duty paperwork (don't have to pay if you clear the shipment yourself)

$3,740.13 if you clear it yourself,
$3,788.80 if you let DHL clear it.

I've gottenlost in all the delays and hevn'et focused on the cost. This thing better work when it gets here.  This isn't come cheap piece of crap, OR I could have gotten seven Mini+ printers...

My experience may be unique. One datapoint doesn't identify a pattern. But...

I would recommend that you keep your box and packing materials when your XL arrives.

My XL5 produced red-screen error messages when it was first powered on. After a few hours of use it would never operate again. It couldn't home, or probe the bed and couldn't start printing. I contacted technical support and after 90 minutes they escalated it to an "XL Specialist" who never contacted me. I don't get joy from fixing and replacing things, I want to build things, so this was a great disappointment. I have asked for a refund and to return the printer. To Prusa's credit, they have been polite and cooperative.

I bought a "fully assembled" printer because I just wanted something that worked. It was 5 hours of assembly and testing before it was set up. Granted, I am slow and meticulous, but there was still a lot to do.

I have two Mini+ printers already and they are just great...especially with the Alpha2 input shaper that cut print times by 25% and resulted in higher quality prints. In contrast, the XL5 took 10 minutes of "Absorbing heat" and other things before it would even begin printing...each and every time I wanted a quick print of something small it was a 10-minute startup ritual.

I still like Prusa, and I will consider an XL5 this spring. Perhaps they will have gotten the kinks worked out by then.

In the meantime I am going to purchase a Bambu Carbon X1C. Other than having long color-swap times and only a 256x256x256 build plate, the Bambu X1C seems to do everything that the XL5 does...and does it faster and better. I'll consider adding an XL5 in the spring. The XL5 swaps colors quickly and has the 360x360x360 build plate but otherwise looks inferior to the Bambu X1C.

Prusa seems to be a well intending company that is committed to good customer service. But I think Prusa has gotten a little fat and show and I no longer on the cutting edge of things in terms of quality, features, or price. ("First you make your name, then you make your money")

How were you able to get US Customs Duty for only 108.47?   DHL Slammed me with $1035 for Duty and Import fees.

$3499.99  5 Tool Head Prusa XL
     128.16   Shipping DHL Worldwide
$3627.16  TOTAL
     -199.00  Deposit
$ 1,035.18 USD   Duty  (23% Duty + Fee)

4662.34   Grand Total

I have heard from others that have imported XLs into the US and each tells me something different.  I have been unable to find a Customs Schedule to figure out what the actual fees should be.  It would seem that they just spin a wheel and whatever you land on is the fee that you get.

Am I the only one that was stuck with such high Duty Fees?  or is this the normal amount to be expected for U.S. Customs?

It doesn’t help how Prusa does their paperwork. This leaves a lot of “discretion” to the customs broker.

There are standardized codes for imported goods. If Prusa hired a customs broker to advise them on the optimal codes to use and then itemized by those codes it would make everything smooth and consistent. But they don’t.

Often an article can be properly classified under several categories, each with different rates. So if Prusa hired a broker to advise them of the optimal codes that would be customer friendly.

My duties and brokerage totaled $175 for an assembled XL5. As my XL5 died and I returned it for a refund, the duties are lost as they are nonrefundable.

I’m five weeks into the return process for my defective XL5 and Prusa is indicating I am still weeks away from seeing my money back. From start to end it’s been a disappointment.

Wow. That’s sickening. Why aren’t Prusa using their ownership of printed solid to ship printers in then distribute from there? Almost like they’re not serious about business in the states.

Duties, Death, Taxes.  You pay them all the same. Imported to US, then sold by Printed Solid, it will no longer be the same price as when sold by Prusa in Prague. The price will be increased by the costs of Shipping, Duties and Taxes.

But it would be less. Brokerage costs are very low on large importations. Also, the broker would be more careful to choose a good price category. It would eliminate some paying $175 and others paying over $1,000 for brokerage and duties.
