Extruder not working on 2nd layer and up for tool head one
Lays the first layer and pre purges perfect. But when it goes to the second layer it goes through the motion but extrudes nothing. Ive changed filament, resliced. I cant figure out why this happens with tool head one. There's no clicking or movement of the filament through the extruder. I just goes through the motion, extruding nothing. Any suggestions?

Can you open the extruder door and see if the gear is turning? I've recently ran into this issue because my idler doors have lost preload from being in an enclosure that got too hot.
What material are you printing?
I'm my case it happens after the first layer because that when full speed kicks in.
RE: Extruder not working on 2nd layer and up for tool head one
Im using a generic PLA. I swapped the entire heater block out and it seemed to fix it for a bit. But a couple days later it started doing this again. It will print the first layer perfect, then the second layer will not extrude. I have changed the entire heater block setup with another new one. I have changed filament. I have updated the firmware. I have resliced the model. Nothing seems to help. I have also noticed that once it gets to the second layer I open the door to research if the extruder is turning. It is not. I'm not sure why it chooses not to extrude on the second layer. It will continue extruding properly half way into the third layer. This has happened on multiple models, and I have also seen a guy on YouTube complaining of the same exact problem. Please give me any pointers so I can fix this.

This seems to be a problem that some users are experiencing where the extruder stops moving. If you search around you'll find other threads on the same topic.
To summarize:
It is either a firmware problem that Prusa is working on (this is what one user states)
Or it's the dwarf board on the extruder. Some have had success with replacing this board.
Supposedly if you disable the print fan the problem will go away. This is supposed to be some sort of diagnostic tool, not a fix.
The third possibility is what happened to me which is that the idler on the filament door lost preload because it got too hot. I'm my case it would stop extruding, but the extruder was still turning. It was just not extruding plastic because the gear was slipping on the filament.
