Better Run Out Function
Hi all!
I’m looking to remove the side runout sensors on my 5-head XL.
What I really don’t like is having to undo the Bowden tube from the extruder and completely remove the filament every time I want to load a new spool.
Has anyone come up with G-code or a mod that lets you feed in the next spool and have the extruder automatically purge the last bit of the old filament?
Seems unnecessary to have to do it manually each time.
That should not be necessary.
Have you at some time bypassed the PTFE tubes to load flexible or very abrasive filament direct to the tool head? If so you probably disabled the side sensors via the LCD menu - re-enable them and the unloads should be painless.
Cheerio,

I want to remove the side sensors — they’re a pain. They always jam, don’t feed smoothly, and won’t retract far enough to pull the filament out properly. On top of that, they waste about two feet of filament every time.

Er, really? OK they can be tricky with very soft filaments but otherwise I've never had one jam - smooth feeding through the sensor is never an issue 'though some very abrasive filaments do grip the inside of the PTFE tubes a bit too much - those are the filaments that I usually bypass.
- and pulling the filament out has never been a problem UNLESS the side sensors are disabled.
I wonder if you've changed one too many settings, try one of Prusa's vanilla presets.

I grant you this one, my answer is to give a young relative a 3D pen and supply them with all the ends as working material.
All of my filament holders are wall mounted above the printer - OK, I usually feed them through the side sensors (rotated) but it also makes it easier to feed directly to the tool head. Click to see full picture.
If you must remove the sensors make sure you disable them in the LCD menu first then either pull out the PTFE tubes to feed directly or open and gut the shells and push the delivery tubes right through to make loading easier.
