Adding pigments to resin?

Has anyone tested adding their own pigments to resins?

Would be really nice to customize the color etc and Monocure has a nice set of pigments:

https://monocure3d.com.au/product-category/cmyk-pigment-set/

Would this work nicely with the Prusa resins? anyone tried? (they are cheaper than monocure)

What are the risks with trying? if its just having to replace FEP film in worst case its not a big deal to just try...

RE: Adding pigments to resin?

Yes I have used pigments to change colours. the effect can be limited because any existing pi

this was originally Prusa Tough Orange! the resin ran out just below the tops of the supports for the bridges,  so I added clear resin because I had no more of the same colour mix. and the clear seemed to enhance the orange tone for the remainder of the  print,
I was not sure whether the supports failed because it ran out of resin, or whether the model was just too thin... so I made a test part of JUST the bridges and it turned out   like below, this was also orange base, with different pigments to dull down the colour

I think chemical compatibility is by far a bigger concern. You could be left with anything from the benign - something that refuses to cure (or only partially cures and continues to leach raw resin (health hazard)) to a rather exothermic reaction (and some new underwear) as it all cures spontaneously.

Granted, the linked product is intended to be chemically compatible with their resins, but I'd still exercise caution and do some research before trying it in a non-recommended resin.

@joantabb

Cool!

However the suggested approach when using pigments with Monocure resin is to use either clear as a base (if you want transparent) or white (if you want opaque), so I would try that first.

It doesn't seem like you got any odd reactions or similar at least, so it looks promising!

Tempted to order the pigment kit eventually, it should be possible to make some quite cool effects!

I apreciate clear or white would be better. The reason i used oranfe was because i had plenty of it. And didn't want to pollute my clear or white... whilst playing...

@alexatkinson903

Havent tried yet, wanted to just around a bit.

Will probably try a test order from moncure with the pigment kit, some rapid clear, rapid white and rapid clear flex could be a cool play combo 😎

but might wait until next salary, just paid for the SL1 so my savings account  allready took a hit 😉

Update:

Did order a set of monocure resins now! 🙂

However having trouble sorting out how to print the FLEX 100 which I tried first...  seems to cool to print flexible stuff 🙂

Created a separate topic to try to sort that out, when that is working I will give a shot at using different pigments.

One practical issue I realized is that there will be plenty of extra containers for the left over tinted resin when experimenting... have to figure out a solution to that...

RE: Adding pigments to resin?

I use inexpensive aluminium drink containers for part used resin and colour mixed resin

and then when the original resin bottles become empty, I re use them as well!

I would be so scared of doing that, not only do I have kids but in general storing toxic substances in drinking bottles... 😬

Might rather visit a local supply store and find same sturdy small opaque bottles, shouldnt be expensive...
