Just got a mail "Your Original Prusa SL1 update" from Prusa with a link to a short video and "Our plan is to ship the first units by the end of January 2019". I guess the expected delivery has moved from December to late January...

Yup surprise its pushed back from December to late January. I wouldnt be surprised if January is missed also.

To pay more for a better product is ok if the delivered value is adequate. But what the SL1 delivers what the Anycubic Photon don’t has? SL1 has tilting mechanism, so hopefully sticking peace’s to the tank ground will be less than the Photon (saw some videos people had trouble with). The fume filter must work much better, so is possible to use the SL1 inside a living room. Connectivity, as a FDM printer I use a modded Cetus machine with Duet Wifi board. It is great to upload Data direct from the PC to the Printer and start the Print. To transfer Data via stick or SD card is out of date. Leveling seems to be better, but how often you have to do that on the Photon? How far I know the support provided by PR is really good, and development of their Slicer as well.
If it is worth the 900€ more I really don’t know. I also pre- ordered a SL1 but PR must deploy more information and underline the advantages of the SL1 in comparison to the Photon. To say Photon is only cheap Chinese crap is not the way to convince me to stay on SL1. What you guys think? There is no real comparison between the verity of SLA\DLP printers what make the decision even more difficult.

SL1 is not shipped yet, so it's hard to compare something which does not exist in the wild.

I pre-ordered this and I'm confident it will be a quality machine. Having said that, I don't think I will cancel, but I am starting to feel a little bit of buyer's remorse. I realize there are quality of life improvements, but I would have really liked to also see a print quality differentiator from the photon given the price premium to make myself feel better about the purchase. Preferably a pixel pitch <47um if it's going to use the same general method of msla as the photon.

For a similar price to sl1, I could get the moai which significantly differentiates from photon by being a laser sla, which has a significant and noticable difference in print result. And even with the QoL improvements of the sl1, having almost 3x price difference with the same print quality tech and spec to the photon is a bit rough, especially since the CurWa is an additional cost on top of that. Perhaps if the CurWa were included as bonus at no extra cost, that would help as well. I could roll my own washing and curing station for less cost than CurWa with similar results.

Like I said, I don't think I'll bail, but I am a bit apprehensive.

Yeah, I'm a tinkerer by nature and I don't necessarily mind growing pains. From my research, the moai and photon both have their own annoyances as well. My biggest gripe is that the sl1's price and feature combination put it at a particularly awkward position between the moai and photon that makes it very difficult for me to confidently evaluate whether it is a good value proposition.

Even the new phrozen sla system, though it also has the same msla tech as photon at least differentiates by having enormous print size and option to interchange large lower res lcd with two higher res screens. That is an interesting feature to address a set of issues many have with sla. Sl1 doesn't have that kind of obvious differentiator.

I believe there has been a Slic3r version on Github for over a month that is capable of producing a zip file containing a sequence of PNG files for the SL1.

And it is "normal" for firmwares to be released only after the machine starts shipping.

Hi Peter,
No question about existing alpha version software. I'm pretty sure PR is printing already for couple month on their SL1_00x and for this they are using already developed software/firmware and adjusting it accordingly.
But you know what I mean. The release version is/was always functional but there are/were always issues in some cases. Over time and with the community help it becomes a really great product.
I saw too many disappointed posts here in the last couple years only because new/inexperienced people see all the awards, great reviews and shiny announcement videos. But at the end it's just a great KIT which can perform really great. So my post is just a warning to new people with too high expectations.

Looks like Edward knows exactly what he is jumping into. So thumbs up and I'm looking forward to see the journey with a new product line.

Having been a beta tester for both MMU1 and MMU2, I probably know better than most what you mean 😉

Now, I don't have a clue about SL1 beta-testing (not just in-house post-alpha testing), but I do hope that it's underway already and that many of the faults have already been fixed.

LoL. Well I know what I'm getting into as well as can be expected for pre ordering a product that has not yet been proven in the wild. There is an element of trust involved, but yes I understand that I'm taking a chance and that it may not be a hassle free out of the box... or even for several months as issues are discovered and hopefully corrected.

I'm new to prusa, and until today was planning on getting in on the preorder sale, since i figured i would get it very shortly after i ordered it. However, it occurs to me to ask if anyone has gotten a printer (assembled or kit) yet? i intentionally waited a bit to order this so i could hopefully see the preassembled printer in action (i noticed a distinct lack of that) but i'm guessing that they haven't even shipped those out yet. I'm also curious about what (if anything) they do if they delay it for a long time? I never ordered anything from prusa before, but i have seen other companies throw in some freebies if there's a long delay, or they did something stupid.

When I ordered the prusa i3 mk3, they had issues for a long time with the powder coated spring Steel sheets. They offered several options for vouchers to make amends, which was nice. So they definitely realize that reputation counts for something. Prusa has succeeded in part because of its reputation. Just recognize at least three things.

1) They are still largely appealing to the hobbyist niche.
2) They are a business and will make decisions that make sense for their continued operation.
3). This is their first step into a new 3d printing technology space.

These facts mean you should adjust expectations accordingly. I would not rely on the preorder being hassle free or if you have mission critical needs.

With all that out of the way, I pulled the trigger on the preorder for a kit. Preassembled machines are shipping out a month before the kits. Both have been postponed by a month so far and I have not seen any new information about it since that postponement. That would put assembled machines going out some time within the next two weeks. I haven't heard anything about any further delays at this time.

Thanks for the response, i just got around to checking the store page for the printer, and now it says shipping February, so i suppose this will have more of a wait than i would like. On the other hand, its not like i need the printer right now, and since moai appears to be using replaceable trays instead replaceable fep film, looks like i'm going to join you and the rest on the interesting roller coaster ride that prusa seems to like making their preorder customers go through.

So i just noticed (don't ask me how i missed it the first time) that the printer went up by a hundred bucks! which i was sorta expecting eventually, but since they're still in the "preorder" phase, i wasn't exactly expecting a price change. That sucks. wonder how hard the moai tanks are to mod....
