Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

Really excited to see that Prusa has officially made a step into SLA printing. I can't wait to see the improvements they make as well.

I do have to say that I will be holding off on ordering this printer until Prusa proves that they can meet their shipping tables and release a stable new product.

Looking forward to reading / seeing more info about this printer in the future.

Yeah, first thing that popped up on Youtube when I woke up, even before I got to the forums here. I would have to look into what SLA printing is and what it can provide over fdm.
Maybe if someone can create a part from both printers and describe the benefits of one over the other showing the differences.

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

On YouTube I found a comparison.

But what the guy did not say is the stuff you have to do after printing. Be warned, uncured resin is pretty unhealthy. It's also more expensive and the builtspace is far smaller than with FDM printers

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

I was hoping for a cartridge system like the form2 has. 😕

Can some one who has experience in sla printing please explain to me what the differences might be between the Prusa sla and something like the Phrozen Shuffle XL, because they cost about the same ?

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

Once they get around the stink (I know it has a provision for a hose to vent out a window with a fan but they still stink or the FormZ I saw sure did... oddly several people including the owner said they could not smell anything) and the huge mess (And yes I saw the part washer option) and a gallons of isopropyl alcohol to add to the amazingly expensive resin that they use.

the big hope is I Think is that a market force like PRUSA can drive a large enough volume of these SL1 printers to help move these materials down closer to the FDM mainstream but I have concerns about the dangerous stuff that has to go into SLA resins I got a headache just from being in a relatively open room with good ventilation I think I would want a high level respirator that worked with my large beard as well as gloves with protective sleeves until safer formulations are on the market....

but once all these problems are solved then yes I will ant to have one too. The part washer and UV lamp part cleaner is a nice bit of industrial design and the fact it uses standard catering SS pot to wash is the sort of nice touch we have come to expect from PRUSA but I think many hobbyists will just build one and makers will be quick off the mark with precut products to make and enclosure and aquarium pumps to provide for some sort of filtration an perhaps spraying of (Lets not forget flammable ) the alcohol

$1200 kit

At this price point, peopoly makes a better option for SLA printing. Larger build volume. FEP and PDMS vats. Solid state laser vs dlp. Is gcode based. Etc..

Was waiting on this but at this price point I'll just get a 2nd Moai.

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

I am sorry that I had a minor surgery on Wednesday, as I had total plans to be at MF in NYC and meet Josef. Well, I did the next best thing... I just ordered the new SL1 from Prusa:). Got the complete setup with washer assembled.

I have great faith in JP and his entire team! I was going to order a 3rd MK3, but my entire family convinced me to purchase the SL1. Come spring and we will meet him in the Midwest MF:) 🙂

Now, we await our MM2 being shipped next month 🙂

As much as I would like one I cannot afford that outlay in one go.

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

I must be completely crazy. I spend half of my time on this forum fuming about the delay in offering PC sheets to the Mk3 early adopters (I am one of course) and most of the rest wondering why there is so little about the MMU2 and chafing at the wait for mine to ship.

Now there is the SL1 which even in the kit form is not cheap. And have you noted the price of the "washing machine"? Costs almost the same as a complete Mk3 kit. And I have no-where to put the machines or deal with the chemical mess and smell.

No way. Not for me. For the first time in well over a year I am going to be free of endlessly watching Prusa shipping estimates slipping.

Who am I kidding? 🙄

SL1 kit and washing machine ordered less than 90 minutes after the announcement was posted here. Once more the long wait begins... :ugeek:

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

I am also still waiting for the powered coated sheet for my MK3 promised a year ago. I also just lost time and money on a print due to a filament sensor fault with no recovery in firmware 3.4 with a filament I've been using for months with no problems. Like many others (see forum and GitHub posts) I reverted back to the old firmware. I think that if they did deliver my MMU2 it would be unusable due to the poor quality of firmware 3.4.
I would like to see Prusa spend resources delivering on their promises to their existing customers before spending efforts on yet another new product. Unlike the previous poster, I won't spend any more with Prusa until the MK3 and MMU2 are fully functional.

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

The SL1 looks like an incredible machine. I have been building a clock with my MK3 and the higher resolution of the SL1 would be a huge improvement. There may also be some improvements like ceramic that would give great surface hardness. I want one.

I am a bit concerned about the fumes. My MK3 with PLA is inside the house.

That is my opinion too.

In fact, I waited for the SL1 before getting the Moai. Considering Prusa surprising with consumer product innovations only known in the industry I even partly hoped it will be a top-down solution because I don't like the hazzle with vats and peel-offs. But that is a bit overpriced for me. Think I will spare up getting the Moai 300 (currently DFA project) or - if the time may change it - a Prusa SL2 if it has a top-down solution.

lol i must be crazy too..... but i guess squeaky wheel gets the oil. Prusa took care of me (not just the free tshirt). But yes, let the waiting begin.

Re: Introducing the Original Prusa SL1!

Hi guys!

I am really exited to see what the SL1 is going to do. I see so many different opinions about the printer. Personally i think it's great Prusa offers SLA machines now and i love to see how it will be picked up by the community. I think it has some cool features like the auto leveling and tilting. It also has some great specs and looks cool like the other Prusa machines. And yess... The build volume could be a bit more but i guess the SL2 might be getting just that.

For me personally it's a bit to expensive so i will keep using my MK3 for now. 😉
