SL1 failing set-up wizard with fan errors

I just built my SL1 kit. On power up, the wizard starts and files with different errors each time.

The main error relates to the fan test. It may fail immediately, during or after the 20 second test.

Each time a different error to the previous. I've run 6 or 8 tests so far. Either fan fail or speed is outside limits.

The printer is running firmware 1.2.3, just updated. I contacted Prusa on chat. They say the fan error is a firmware bug that will be fixed in the next release. They suggested I can go on to test print if the error can be ignored. I will try later. For now the calibration is OK. But every time I power on, I get the setup wizard, which I know will fail. I guess I just click on "back".

After a few chats with support, a new FW1.3.0 beta is available now on request. It's running a test print now, although with a warning error about the blower fan. Wish me luck, I may still need a new fan.

Update: test print completed, but detached from the plate. I guess it got a bit dirty during the troubleshooting process.

I'll try again, but the SL1 didn't get more than a little warm, seemed normal.

Two successful prints and a third running now.

Still the fan warning. I checked with the new firmware, before I closed up the printer cover. The fan (on the right-hand side) does not turn. I'll be contacting support again for a replacement.

@andrew-h46

Did you get this issue resolved? I have the same problem. After completing assembly and attempting the setup wizard the blower fan (on the right side of the printer) does not spin and I receive the same error. To help anyone that comes after me I have tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Remove and reconnect blower fan connector from mainboard to ensure a good connection.
  • Removed case to ensure no pressure was preventing the fan from spinning.
  • Factory reset.
  • Contacted support, received beta firmware 1.30-beta.0; installed, factory reset, ran wizard. More helpful error message this time indicated that RPM of blower fan not in range with all RPM readings at 3333.

I have created a video of the process and sent it to support, awaiting verification from dev team and next steps.

At no point have I seen the blower fan move at all so I suspect that it might be defective. I have contacted support via live chat and provided a video to demonstrate the issue; they indicated that they would send me an email with next steps after it has been reviewed by the dev team.

It seems unwise to attempt to use the printer without completing the initial wizard steps so I'm going to wait until I hear from Prusa Support before starting the first print. I'm hopeful that you've had a positive outcome with your issue and that I get a quick resolution so I can start using my new printer.

@xiteer

I received a replacement fan after I contacted support again. It took about a week after they notified me they were sending it. I haven't fitted it yet. I haven't noticed any overheating so far. I'm still puzzling out my adhesion problem.

RE: SL1 failing set-up wizard with fan errors

I just wanted to report back for anyone that comes after me.

Further inspection showed that the wires had been disconnected from the solder points on the blower fan. I'm not sure if the fan was defective or if I applied pressure to the wire causing them to break during assembly. I had to remove the blower fan from the mounting bracket to properly see what happened.

I updated my case with Prusa Support and they shipped another fan very quickly.

I replaced the blower fan tonight and have completed a test print with a fully functional SL1. Very happy so far with the product, also very happy with the support I received from Prusa.

@andrew-h46 -- I hope you get your adhesion problem solved. My first print did not stick to the bed and I realized I hadn't fully tightened the calibration screw during the calibration process; I repeated the process and tightened it until I was afraid more torque would break something and was able to print my little Prusa army successfully.

@xiteer

Have you noticed the blower fan in action? I thought it only runs when the internal temperature rises.

I'm continuing work on the adhesion problem. It's inconsistent, but there are other threads to follow this on. Thanks for your input.
