Firmware update 6.5.3

I have a problem after updating to latest firmware. The ability to preload to MMU just one filament at a time has disappeared. Now when I go to preload to MMU I just get the option to change the type of filament which then lets me change the wording to whichever filament I am using, i.e.:- PLA or PETG etc where it used to say , Load number 1,2,3,4 or 5. Now I only get the option to "preload all." That's  ok if you want to change all 5 but it is a bit of a pain when you are only changing one. You still get the option to "Preload to MMU but when you select that it just gives you the option of number 1-5 filament change or don't change. It does this on both the Core One and the Mk4 since updating to firmware 6.5.3. Is this a problem with the firmware or am I missing something?

Best Answer by FoxRun3D:

First option always let you load without selecting a filament type first. This is new behavior.

No, you're not missing anything. It's a regression I'm not too happy about. i almost never use five filaments, and having t specify the filament type now for every filament I load is a pain in the rear end.

Thanks for replying, hopefully if enough people complain we may get a reversal. Take note Prusa.

Just reading up on this (playing "late adopter" when it comes to firmware, need a reliable printer at the moment).

Reality check:

  • Most prints are single-color. Not having to disable the MMU saves me some hassle
  • The VAST majority of multi"material" prints are two colors
  • Three colors? Really pushing it.
  • (four): I have one design I'm printing repeatedly - a personalized ruler - but tell myself, this is gimmicky, switch to 3
  • (five) - have some wiggling room for the unexpected.

Conclusion:

MMU usability should focus on two-color use case, and get out of the way for single-color prints.

Sadly, "MMU usability" generally - and that's my big disappointment with Prusa's marketing language - seems a problem in search of someone solving problems.

Most of my prints are four or five colours and I sometimes only want to change one or two colours, so for me it has become a pain in the backside.

For me with the newest firmware update of the mmu3 "Ejecting" a fillament means inserting it further into the ptfe tube, especially if it runs out this is super annoying as it causes unintentional side effects too, like the x/y getting misaligned and z getting corrupted (somehow) so yeah its pretty awkward right now with that, i am thinking downgrading that to the latest stable.

6.5.3 and the respective mmu3 firmware is NOT stable.

you can still load any number of filaments you want. you go to preload to mmu, tell it what kind of filament is in the tool slots you want to load then scroll down past tool 5 and select "carry out the changes".  they could really have used one more line on the display.

Yes, that is a way of doing it but after this firmware update why does it suddenly want to know what type of filament you have loaded? Prior to this update it didn't want or didn't care what type of filament you were loading you just had the option to either load a filament singly or all five together, why do they suddenly want to know what type of filament it is? The type of filament is decided in the slicer programme and not the MMU.

I've had mine for a little over a year and I can't recall it not asking what kind of filament was loaded. Both as a mk4 and a core one. I could be completely misremembering. But I would assume it is for when you kick off a program it can verify the correct type is loaded? You wouldn't get that info though if you use the buttons on the mmu.

Yes, I have never had to input the type of filament before this update but I don't think it will get changed as the recent email I have received called, Speed Up Your MMU3 with the New FW⚡ about the new Bondtech INDX that is out this spring will take the place of the MMU,and that utilises 8 different filament colours. So I think that the MMU will become classed as "old tech" and become obsolete with no further firmware updates. (Bondtech INDX - Add 8-Material Printing to Your Prusa CORE One+)

I’m not inclined to get in line for new vaporware when they don’t even properly support their bedrock product anymore.

2022 - Creality Ender 3 V2
2024 - Prusa MK4S/MMU3
2026 - Bambu P2S/AMS2Pro
2028 - Liquid CMY for billions of colors?
