RE: Original Prusa MMU3 upgrade kit (for MK4) - Shipping soon?

The Bambu has plenty of problems with the AMS system from the videos & posts I've reviewed... its not trouble free as a lot of Bambu users would have you believe. Yes, I know the MMU2 has problems... I have one, and even an MMU1 on one of my 2 MK2S. But the AMS is years newer than the MMU2 and if you upgrade the MMU2 firmware to the MMU3 and use some of the Mods or new parts the MMU3 is really good on the MK3.

As far as the 16 colors/filaments the Bambu with 5 AMS units go  - I've read that it can be a nightmare... and there is no reason 6 MMU3 and a firmware modification, can't do the same thing as the AMS. There was even a user mod that had, I think, a 20 filament MMU2 on a single unit.

No printer is care-free, no matter what the marketing team says. Always looks good on paper, but the reality can hit pretty fast.

I don't like the idea to replace the nextruder main plate every few month, but i'll accept some inconvenience, because it's cheap and most likely it will be ~10-15 mins.
What i do like is that i'm told this ahead by Prusa, so i can still decide if i want to keep going with this project or not.
Now i'm not saying the communication is flawless, it was a 3 month silence just to get some info, but Prusa did the right thing to hold back MMU3, until it's ready.

Let's hope we all get our MMU3 soon and have fun showing off our prints on social media.

Now, let's hope they ship an extra plate or two with the MMU3.

Can I add some to my order right now?  What is the part number?

My MK4 has been amazing.  Prusa tech support has been beyond incredible.  Thought I am impatient for my MMU3, I prefer to wait than to have problems out of the box.

My big wish is they start supporting more than just PETG and PLA.

News from the development and new shipping estimate

Hello,

We want to share the latest developments and updates on our MMU3 for the MK4.

Both internal and external tests with PLA are overwhelmingly positive. We have spent the last couple of weeks fine-tuning PETG, and we are also getting good results. These are the two materials the MMU3 will officially support. If you need to print other polymers, it is likely possible, but we want to clearly state that only PLA and PETG are the materials we have extensively tested and officially support.

MMU3 beta testers

Apart from our internal testing department, we have a team of fantastic external beta testers, who have been testing every step of the development thus far. Many changes made to the MMU3 were based on their feedback. We are now giving them the green light to start posting their experience with the MMU3, so you might start seeing pictures and videos of it online.

MMU3 integration in Prusa Connect

As we continue testing the MMU3 for the MK4, the Prusa Connect team has added new functionality. The MK4 can newly report to Prusa Connect if the MMU3 unit is connected. Prusa Connect is now also able to read the currently active MMU3 slot and display the information in the status bar.

Technical updates and resolved issues

Layer shifts - In our testing, we had problems with random layer shifts. These were quite rare, but since the print cannot be saved if the problem occurs, they were very annoying to encounter. The prints were clean with nothing the nozzle could crash into. The culprit turned out to be a bug in the firmware, occurring only when the MMU unit is connected. We believe we have fixed the problem in our latest internal firmware build. We continue to investigate the issue, to make sure the problem is completely eliminated.

Spool holders - The spool holders and filament buffer remain the only components where we are still doing significant changes. Our tests show that on the MK4, where the length of the unloaded filament  is slightly longer compared to the MK3S+, filament tension in the buffer and from the spool holders impacts reliability. We are testing different setups to see which work the best.

Enhancements to printed parts - Over the last period of testing, we have made several improvements to the printed parts. We are now printing the production version of these parts, but further testing is necessary to ensure they function without causing any new issues.

Wear of the Nextruder main plate - Lastly, we are investigating wear of a part which guides the filament from the drive gears into the nozzle tube. The wear is caused by repeated loads and unloads of filament. Without the MMU, this wear is insignificant. However, a single MMU print can have thousands of filament loads and unloads, increasing the wear rate. Once this part wears out, the printer is unable to properly push filament into the nozzle. We're testing different materials and manufacturing methods for this part to maximize its lifespan while maintaining functionality. It's possible this part will be treated as a consumable, requiring replacement every few months.

Shipping date estimate

We are committed to ensuring the MMU3 for the MK4 is a reliable and effective upgrade and we’re doing everything we can to begin shipping it by the end of March. Thank you for your patience.

Happy Printing!

Josef Prusa

Hello,

if I misunderstood, the beta testers could already share their experience, is there a video or forum where they explain?

I would love to see the website for the mmu4! I am so very interested in this and would love to get on the MMU(4) preorder as well!

I just received an email from the MMU4 team, and it's beginning Beta at the end of March.   Good to see the new tip cooling technology isn't holding this up.  Apparently freezing the tips while ramming creates the best tips without strings.     They did mention the new Zirconia hardened nozzle as well, which enables a quick materials transition.   They're really locking this new concept into a potential release this next quarter.   I'm sure the MMU3 will be upgradable, though.  A confirmation that the MMU4 will handle exotic filaments is also a welcome plus...

Okay, where are you getting the MMU4 model? i know the MMU3 for MK4 email just came out last week, but theres nothing about an official supersession to the MMU3. Preorders for the MMU3 for MK4 started in July 2023 and there has been nothing about a MMU4 yet.

I think we are being trolled.  At the very least we won’t see this thing until 2026.  Also, it would seem to make the statements about the MMU3/MK4 to be a lie.  Are they going to pivot to a MMU4 after talking about the MM3?

Posted by: @christopher72

Yikes, I thought it was common knowledge and not still under social media embargo.  The MMU3 was designed to work with the Mk3s+.  There's a bridging tech effort for a workaround for the Mk4, but the MMU4 was designed ground up for the Mk4.    3 goes with 3,  4 goes with 4, etc.  I think it's a really good play.  4 filaments in a dry box with a dehumidifier and a spool usage counter based on pulling through the sensor at the box side of the PTFE tube.   Flawless changes and expandable to 32 active spools.  I only have preordered the double dry box version with 8.  They knew they had to compete with the BBL AMS... It's the secret to printing the exotics, keeping them dry to prevent the strings of death on change.   I'm probably already in trouble for sharing and ignoring the MMU4 NDA I signed.

If you want your MMU3 for the MK4 right now:

Order the MMU3 for the MK3 and read the post.

Volker, great work. However there are still some parts that will be required (and haven't been released yet) if you don't intent to damage your nextruder. In my tests, it didn't take long until the nextruder gears were full of filament splices.

That's nice, but not everyone can make the most important thing, namely a special cable for the MK4 - MMU3 connection. And without him it is impossible!

We'll see. I do not expect a lot of modifications. Prusa already mentioned that the nextruder mainplate will be a consumable:

I will print some in PETG with high resolution settings - just in case.

that's right - and it took me some time because I do not have the right crimping tool and the contacts are very small. And you can mess your xbuddy or MMU3 if you do something wrong with the connector pinout.
So - take the risk - or wait.

Hello,

Those who have the MMU3 order who received the email that would begin to be sent in March, can tell us if there is any news in this regard or in principle the March date is maintained.

Thank you.
