MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
I've just clarified a few things with Support, regarding the $89 upgrade that should be released end August / early September.
Apparently, no filament will be included to print your own parts. (I didn't think so, given the $89 price tag).
The label plate with the 3 colour printing (done post processing in the factory) will not be included.
We will be able to print our own from an STL file.
I'd be interested to know what colours are used in the factory post processing printing process for the white, silver and black, given the colour palette available for Prusament has multiple whites and blacks etc.
The selector front plate with the brass insert will not be included. Although the print file has changed slightly, apparently the MMU2 part can be reused.
(I've actually bought a cheap insert tool set which works really well to set the brass insert taken from the MMU2S part, into the new MMU3 selector plate.)
Obviously, things may change in relation to this information when the $89 upgrade is actually released.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
Do you know what will be included in the upgrade kit, I can't seem to find any info.
Printing the aparts is not a problem as they are now on the website but it seems as we use a lot of the hardware there only seems to be the electronics that may change. So is that it?
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
My guess as to what would be included would be as follows:
- Electronics changes as previously advised by Support - "The control board is the same, however there's an additional little board plugged in the ports of the power and signal cables that's to avoid the problem of miscommunication between the cables, which sometimes were causing power issues".
- PTFE feed tubes from filament to buffer & buffer to MMU3
- some new metal parts
I don't believe there will be any changes to the extruder.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
I don't believe there will be any changes to the extruder.
Just saw something in relation to extruder changes........looks like plastic part changes only so assume user can print.
"As for the version for the Original Prusa MK4: we’re still in the process of testing the modified Nextruder plastic parts that enable smooth filament loads and unloads for the Original Prusa MMU3."
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
Ok Thanks, I guess I'll have to wait until I can order the upgrade kit.
I see there are parts that can be printed now, but I'm not sure if i want to go as far as to print the buffer yet as I have the RM3 buffer so I'll see if thats ok for now.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
I saw that too, but I think they mean the changes from MK3S to MK4. I say this because I am running a PTFE tube to a block that holds the ends of my 5 filaments until the MMU arrives, and it doesn't seem to have any issues. I just undo the end on my block (not on the printer) and pull out the one when unloading, and shove the one to load in there, and everything works. So I don't believe there will be any modifications to the actual MK4 needed... but I am speculating.
I do this because my filament storage has some resistance that causes issues that are alleviated when the filament is run in a tube to the extruder.

RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
I hope the housing (plastic parts) come with upgrade kit... my MMU2 was take apart and I tossed all plastic parts in trash. I do kept the motors and electronic parts - except that I recently bought new electronic board that I think my original electronic board is not working well.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
I printed out the MMU3 Parts and started the upgrade process on my MMU2, all things went smoothly though I did have to buy the following:-

M3x10mm screws
Other than that it got built and plugged it into the Mk3.
Did a Load all and it worked great.
Did a multicolour print and in between each colour change, the mmu reset itself once each time. After the 4th color change i had to do a reset button on the mmu.
I was also using FW 3.11
Upgraded to FW3.13 and things went horrible, Mk3 complained about mmu firmware, so I upgrade mmu and then mmu behaved like a machine gun. had to downgrade both.
Since then it performs well in MMU single mode.
I did not have/use the MMU3 daughterboard.
I do plan to use a step down transformer.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
Added a Step Down transformer and it all started working beautifully. Would I still pay the £87 for the MMU3 upgrade. Probably not.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
Is the upgrade worth it then? Do the electronics remain the same? What does the step down transformer do? Thanks.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
Its early days, but the MMU3 Printable parts do seem to make the MMU behave better, less jerking and more streamlined paths for the filaments to flow through.
The step down transformer is what I and a number of other users, have used to fix the MMU2S flashing Red/Green lights problem. So far no mmu filament change failures. The MMU3 upgrade will include a daughterboard which does the same fix plus allows you to connect to the Mk4.
RE:
I cant wait for the step down upgrade, I have this issue all the time with the lights flashing for no reason.
RE:
August is coming to an end and the upgrade from MMU2S to MMU3 is still not available
MMU2->MMU3 upgrade kits will be available for order in August.
This product is supplied as a kit - you must assemble it by yourself!
Plastic parts are not included in the package. You need to print them yourself.
RE: MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade info
Thanks for the feedback. Do you think adding the new power connector to the mmu2s will solve the power issues? Do you have details of the step down solution people are using?

It's a pity that the order expected to be shipped between 6/9 and 12/9 is now suddenly post-dated between 25/9 and 10/1. I've already paid anyway. At the time of purchase, the delay was one week, now it's 3/4 weeks. You're not serious!
RE:
Even if it won’t help, I sent an incendiary email last night about the MMU2S/MMU3 upgrade for the MK4 which is finally delayed in November while the complete kit will be available in October.
I find it really unfair to neglect the first owners of MMU2 who have faced countless problems.
Apart from the PCB and the extra wiring all other item can be found anywhere, so what the problem... my parts are printed and I have to wait again and again.

Funny, coz I chatted with the Prusa Support 1th of September, just after they updated the webshop with the MMU2S > MMU3 for MK3S+ to ask them if the plastic parts are included in the kit, and they sad.
MMU3 unit:
- mmu3-selector-front-plate
- mmu3-label-plate
MK3S+extruder
- adapter-printer-mmu
- chimney-cover
- extruder-idler-mmu
- chimney
- chimney-base
yes, these printed parts are already included in the MMU2S > MMU3 Upgrade kit for the MK3S+

I'm speculating, but I assume it is not the problem of lack of the hardware or tools, but rather software not being ready / or tested enough. I would assume that Prusa wants to release on MK4 a firmware with more MMU control than what is available on MK3S+.

That they take their time to finalize the firmware is understandable and crucial given the MMU2 firmware unreliability, but what really bothers me is that they make the owners of MMU2 wait one month more while we have almost all the parts to complete the new unit.
Apart from the fact that they certainly prefer to sell complete units for more than 300€ to new customers before selling upgrades for only 99€ I see no other reason. But maybe someone has another explanation about it.
