Is there a reason why the steel ball filament sensor design (for mk3.5) was replaced with the tower design?

I recently purchased the MMU3 which includes "upgrading" the filament sensor setup to the tower design (I have a Mk3.5). Like many people, I had repeated issues with this new design. The sensor was never accurate, no matter how much I calibrated it. I even tried mods like the "no chimney mod," but that didnt work for me either.

So today I swapped all of that out and added the steel ball design back to my machine. And wouldn't you know it, it works perfectly again.

Am I missing something? Is there a reason why the steel ball design needed to be removed? It seems completely unnecessary to me
