Spool holder mod for 5x lower friction
I didn't like the high friction in the spool holders. My belief was that it was coming from the very small 8mm diameter of the aluminum rod which lead. Making the rod stationary and having the spool ride on a 35mm diameter will allow the bearings to move one quarter the rotation for a given amount of filament.
I tried it and it works!
It uses 1" Sch40 PVC pipe (had some in the garage). If somebody tells me the inner diameter of the most readily available PVC pipe in your area, I should be able to adapt the design (although I can't test it).

My MMU1 spool holder with modified outlets are working for me, and I have cut down the PTFE feeder tubes.

That is a massive bearing you have on the end! (or it's a 608 and a really tiny spool)
The center roller type always worked well for me, but I was looking for a quick easy mod with the original brake until I have everything working.

Yeah, the bearings are 40 mm diameter and I needed to get rid of the fixed PTFE and high friction spool feed arms.
The outlets have a 22.5 degree bend in the hole, which gives just enough friction in reverse. With straight holes in the outlet and captive PTFE the spools will rewind on unload as long as they are less than half full.
