mmu2s failing to update!!

I am having this same issue. Did you ever resolve it? Or can anyone help me resolve it?

I am attempting to flash the MMU2s unit. I am able to see the COM port. If I reset the MMU, I can briefly see the bootloader on a different port in the flash utility.

avrdude-slic3r: stk500v2_recv(): timeout
avrdude-slic3r: stk500v2_getsync(): timeout communicating with programmer
avrdude-slic3r: Could not open port: COM5

Any help appreviated!

Have you disconnected the usb cable to your prusa printer controller,

In my experience, prusa Slicer does not like both printer and mmu connected at the same time

I tried that. I've tried shutting it off then on and then plugging it in. I've tried with it plugged in and turning it on, or pressing reset. I've looked at the device manager I can see it shows up as a com port, because I have the option to change the baud rate. I've tried different cables and differnt ports and different machines. I dragged the printer over to my desktop. 

I can see it (the mmu) talks to the printer because I can see it listed under support. There it reports FW: 1.0.6-372. And if this seems like a huge jump (considering the downloaded drivers are reporting 3.12.1), it is. It's just been that long since I've tried this thing because I keep getting defeated. I keep trying and failing. and failing And that's the thing. I paid hundreds of dollars for this stupid thing and I've literally once gotten it to print one time. One time.

I have easily 100+ prints out of this printer with so much success. Gorgeous prints. And just one time I was able to get this  thing to work. I keep coming back to this thing thinking it can't be that hard; that I _must_ be doing something wrong. And every time nothing works. Nothing works. I'm 99% sure I had a defective board because the lights would randomly flash. So I paid for a new board. I paid because I had been trying and failing for so long that any semblance of a warranty was long gone. I bought the MMU2 to MMU2S upgrade kit. I ordered new cables. And a new FINDA. Nothing has ever worked. It keeps _almost_ working. Almost.

The lights flash. It won't load. It won't change filament. It won't respond. It does something completely unexpected 3 minutes into a print. I keep chasing some update, some fix, some adjustment that will make this thing work. I keep thinking there's something I can do to make this work. But there isn't. I keep thinking it's just some lack of understanding. But I'm not stupid and can follow directions. I am frustrated though.

Just tonight after trying to flash the firmware I decided to do a single filament print. So I loaded a filament and for good measure I turned the printer off and loaded my SD card. When I started the print it asked me what filament I wanted. I selected my filament and I know it's loaded and ready to go without issue. But no, I get 5 flashing lights. A big FU to me. Again. I repeat the same process and it works. It loads without acting strange at all. I have zero clue. Absolutely no idea.

But you know what Joseph. You win. I Give Up. I give up. I just give up. I have tried and tried and tried and never has this thing worked. And it never will. I give up.

Unplug all cables to the board expect the power then try update

I came across this video which shows that both the firmware of the printer and the mmu2 unit need to be replaced.

He also talks about a part for the mmu2 unit that needs to be replaced.

Watch the video from start to finish, hope you can get the printer working now.

Oh for heavens sake. So the issue is this. I haven't flashed a firmware in at least a year or so. I assumed the naming convention had changed (and I forgot how tiny these files are). No. Literally the entire issue is the MMUS download zip does not have the MMU firmware in the zip file.

Here is the file I was trying to use like an idiot:

There's no MMU firmware in this zip.

I do find a pdf in the zip file that talks about a factory reset of the MMu2s.

Did you perform this factory reset after upgrading your printer?

So is that not working?  I think it is doing the same as mine- it starts out acting like it doesn’t know where it is and never tries to ‘zero’.  If I as, it (using the buttons) to move to either end position, it will then figure out where it is and start to index on the right one.  But it is then consistent on feeding.

It seems to have a mind of its own.

This thing is completely stupid. During the week it started doing this thing where I would move the selector and the light would indicate that the selector had moved to a new position, but the selector was completely unmoved.

Then it went back to what you see in the video. No idea what changed. It would randomly just flash the five red/green lights. Sometimes at different times during the bootup or print process. Like I was able to load a filament. But when I went to print I got the 5 lights. Other times, I couldn't even move the selector without getting 5 lights.

I checked the voltages coming into the board and they (each red compared to each black) are all 24v. I jiggled the wires at the RAMBo and put everything back together and it is currently printing again. Maybe there is a bad solder joint on the RAMBo? Maybe this version of the RAMBo just isn't capable of operating with the MMU2 properly? Maybe cycling the power helped something random? Regardless, the video with the unpredictable behavior is the best description of how this stupid thing works. I have even connected my laptop to the MMU2 serial monitor while it is going through the bootup process and when the 5 lights happens, nothing in the serial console gives any indication as to what the issue is. My disappointment is immeasurable. 

In the end, I am 100% convinced what I bought simply does not work as intended.

Hi guys. I have a disappointing update to make. Since this post here, I've spent hours upon hours working on this MMU2 kit. I replaced the main board. I replaced all three servos. I replaced the cables. I literally replaced every part of this machine. Nothing. Nothing has fixed the issues. 

But it's turning out to be a design problem. Apparently it's an open secret. But nobody reading this thread knew about it or alerted me to it. I ordered the upgrade from MMU2 to MMU3 and it arrived recently. In the box I noticed there is a PD-board. So instead of going through the entire upgrade I decided to try _just_ the pd board. With the circuit board dangling from the back of the mmu, I installed the PD-board and the cable. And like that, everything is fixed.

I can't describe how angry I am. This whole time it was a design issue. There was literally _nothing_ I could do to make this thing work.  Encouraging messages like "Never give up" and "try this random thing" were all red herrings for a broken product.

Oh I just reread your post yes it's a known issue plugging the usb portnof the mmu into power while it prints fixes this
