Extruder Filament Sensor Fails to Trigger in Real Tests

I have a MK3S+ that I upgraded to the MMU2S.  I've printed an entire Settlers of Catan set with it so the machine itself works.

However, the filament sensor in the extruder is driving me nuts.

WHEN: I insert the ALLEN KEY into the extruder...the filament sensor registers "1" (expected).

WHEN: I insert any filament (several different PLA colors) into the extruder...the filament sensor registers "0" (not expected).

I have:

  • Printed several variations of user upgrades for the sensor tower.
  • Replaced the entire IR sensor with one I ordered from Prusa directly.
  • Reassembled the original Prusa MMU upgrade parts.

When I looked around this forum for help with my XL's Z-height being off all the time, I read an idea I hadn't thought of (take the nozzles out of the extruders, put them back in--ensure they're tight enough, and the problem went away).

I'm hoping for some similar "Homer D'OH" level suggestions on this one as the MMU2S can't even do single-color let alone multiple if it never senses it has filament (and it's been unused for two years).
