Disabling MMU2S

I had an MK3 and loved it, I "upgraded" to the MMU2 and hated it. I was able to insert a piece of filament into the MMU2 output to disable the MMU2 entirely and use the printer as if it wasn't there. I did this for quite a while. Then came the free "upgrade" to MK3S and MMU2S, back to hate it, hate it, hate it. It also seems like I cannot easily disable it either.

Is there a way to easily disable this piece of junk? I would like to leave it in place and waste half a day of my life each time a new firmware comes out in the off chance it can transform it in to not a total piece of garbage (not holding my breath). I don't want to have swap the hotend sensor and unplug the MMU2 every time I'm feeling sadistic.

I really regret "upgrading" this printer.

RE: Disabling MMU2S

You can disconnect the power cable from the rambo and the PTFE/festo from the extruder. Then you can feed filament into the extruder and print with the standard MK3S profile. There are 2 operational caveats compared to a true plain MK3S:

  1. You have to press the filament into the gears before the autoload will kick in.
  2. Similarly the run out won't trip until the end of the filament has already gone through the gears. So if you let it run out of filament you need to either push the remnant through the extruder or remove parts from the extruder until you get to it. The simple answer is to simply not let it run out 😉 😀

If you are going to keep trying it out semi-regularly, however, you might look at installing a switch to cut the power to the MMU rather than having to keep disconnecting it from the rambo.

You can also just pull the data cable from the EINSY board and leave the power cables screwed in - faster and easier to restore.

I have the Bondtech hot end and it is able to push up enough filament for me to grab it (provided I remove the PTFE tube of course) and pull it out.  It is a very good hot end.

RE: Disabling MMU2S

If you don't use it, just remove it. New firmware will not solve your issues. Maybe a redesigned IR sensor holder would help many people but in this case you will redo the extruder anyway which will take the most time.
