Price for one and the 5th tool for another.

Both have their issues (some similar, some different) and neither is going to be a trouble free experience.

If you want a true multi-material experience, the Palette will have some issues there as it splices the filament stream on the fly. So you will probably run into issues with materials that don't fuse together.

There are some difficulties with the MMU2 in that regard too, but that is fixed by a user script posted here that fixes the timing of the temperature changes during material swaps, making it possible.

Consider ease of use too, the palette requires you to process and send separate files to the unit and printer with some tricks to keep them in sync. For an MMU it's still just one gcode file.

Bottom line: You need to really think har what you want to do, and look at:

a) what you want to achieve

b) how each of these options achieves that goal, and problems it may have with doing so.

RE: Why choose MMU2S?

My decision went towards MMU2 mainly because:

  • Open Source / Easy to modify
  • Price / Warranty (limit to 15.000 splices back in the days and 25.000 now is still kind of pretty low for Palette)
  • One ecosystem with ongoing development/improvements
  • Easier to recover failed filament changes

You will find happy and disappointed user for both devices because it's again an additional layer of complexity (and potential issues). Pick whatever fits best for you. There are tons of reviews for both devices, so you can see how they work. Just be prepared to tinker.
