Re: MMU2 - will it ever work reliably ?

What a disappointment and waste of money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the meantime in another place of the world.....

But I think it's important that we are getting a picture from both sides. MMU2 in current state is not really end consumer friendly. The plastic parts need to be adjusted during assembly, the filament holder are only partially usable and being replaced by almost everybody. Free choice of filament requires proper Slic3r settings where we don't have much detailed explanation how to do it.

Anyway, I like my MMU2 and for this price it's a great enhancement for my MK3. I can create parts which I couldn't before, even if I have to clean the filament path from time to time if I print with nasty filament.

ya, it is working well for some of us. I am all stock hardware and software. (spool holders don't count)

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

I thought I was at that point once too but as soon as I felt comfortable it would fail.

Re: MMU2 - will it ever work reliably ?

Hello,

Today I abandoned definitely !!!
During the last month I had a few good experiences where the MMU worked, but then there were more days/prints when the damn thing just failed without any apparent reason. I didn't change anything from the previous prints, after all.

So today I had to print in a hurry a prototype and it failed again. Spend again 2 hours troubleshooting and failed to get it to work.
So I dismounted the thing downgraded the firmware and printed my part......

What a disappointment and waste of money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Per chance, did you contact Prusa support? This is coming from someone who returned theirs but support was wonderful with providing suggestions on what to do next. Worst case scenario is that you opt to return it and Prusa has a consumer friendly 90 day return policy. They send you the label and the customs docs, you just drop it off at a shipping center.

So far I was able to relate the issues to the root cause. My shelf is already full of MM prints, also 30+ hours prints and 700+ tool changes. Also mixing PLA/PETG/ABS is working fine for me. "Working fine" doesn't mean it's just "push one button and it's done deal". Each print requires good setup and monitoring it from time to time.
Maybe because of that I can understand where people are struggling using it. There are many things which might go wrong. But if you defeat this beast, you get big bang for your bucks.

I just load and go. I rarely adjust anything. Pen spring mod, clear tubing to replace the orange, Pretty MMU profile, and auto-rewind spool holders. Stock firmware. It's rare I have a problem.

This is a 5 color Benchy. 4 different brands (Inland gray and brown, Amazon green, CC3D Silk Silver, and MG Chemicals Wood Fill)

Some other stuff.

Thanks!

The only thing I really want the mmu for is to use the soluble supports. I hate supports like the plague they are.

Re: MMU2 - will it ever work reliably ?

Received in December, tried for 2 weeks with 1 half successful print. Downgraded. Tried another time after 2 weeks, no succsess even loading the filament constantly, detached 2nd time.
I get great results on the stock MK3, the MMU is crap so far. But I don´t like to get defeated. I will give it another try, when I calmed down so I won´t throw it out of the window after the next 5 hours adjustment session, with ridiculous results.

Cheers

After waiting months to get this upgrade and being next in the delivery line, I canceled my order for the Multi-Material upgrade. Thank you guys for your comments and this forum thread.

That means I'll get mine a little sooner. 🙂

Good luck!!! You have an 83% chance of having major issues, and 64% chance of it never working for you at all.

I like that!

I just don't get all the hatred about the MMU2. I've had mine about a month and the only issues I had out of the box were the horrible spool trays. I did plan ahead and had 2.5mm ID PTFE tubing to replace the standard tubing they sent, everything else was/is stock. The problems I encounter now are mainly model related and how to get them to print better with the MMU2, and where to best situate my RepBox so it doesn't create unnecessary friction along the filament path.

If you want pain, go try the MMU1.

That is much better than my 99.997% chance of not hitting the power ball and my 68.2% chance of being shot during race riots in Uganda.

You're certainly the minority when it comes to out of the box success with the MMU 2.0. I owned the MMU 2.0 for 3 months and was not able to get a single successful print. I tried spool holder mods, custom firmware, and other mods after I wasn't successful with it working stock.

I wonder how many MMU 2s they sold. We could easily find out if more people had out of the box success (not counting the spool holders) by seeing how many purchasers there are and how many people have sought help making it work. That would show us how successful it is out of the box. People who do not have problems usually do not post anything at all.

I think I recall a figure of over 10,000 MMU2 units being mentioned around the time it started shipping.
